This  Job Description is established by the South Adams County Fire Protection District (“District”) to outline the basic requirements, duties and general responsibilities of the Firefighter/Paramedic position and is written to complement the District's Member Handbook and Standard Operating Guidelines.

**This position holds a probationary status of 12 months from date of hire**

Position Summary:
The Paramedic performs emergency medical advanced life support procedures in accordance with state protocols, the District's rules, policies and procedures, including but not limited to, the Member Handbook and Standard Operating Guidelines.

Immediate Supervisor:
The Paramedic reports directly to the Shift Officer (assigned Shift Officer).

Supervisory Responsibility:
None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Paramedic and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the District’s rules, policies and procedures, as they pertain to the Operations Division specifically and the District generally, including but not limited to the rules, policies and procedures contained in the District’s Member Handbook, Payroll Procedures Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.


2. Provide rescue and emergency medical technician advanced life support at emergency scenes and as assigned for assistance to sick or injured persons treating them according to the Advanced Life Support guidelines, including the use of intravenous therapy, endotracheal intubation, pharmacological therapy, pacing, cardioversion, and defibrillation when indicated.


3. Assist in removal of victims from hazardous situations.


4. Perform patient assessment and management of illness or injury to all patients. Examine patients to determine probable or possible injury or illness. Take and record all patient vital signs and advanced diagnostics per protocol. Communicate necessary findings to hospital emergency room personnel.


5. Transfer, lift, and move patients while employing appropriate safety and lifting techniques.


6. Lead and manage on-scene personnel in the direct management of the patient’s illness or injury.


7. Perform complex diagnostic and medical procedures including, but not limited to intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, recognition of cardiac arrhythmias, and administration of various medication including DEA scheduled drugs.


8. Complete patient care information and required documentation in compliance with all established Fire District procedures.


9. Check all personal gear, assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure safe and effective operation.


10. Respond to alarms of fire or other emergency, including laying, and connecting hose, raising ladders, and using fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, pike poles, Halligans, saws, extrication tools and appliances, and other equipment safely, efficiently and in accordance with the District's rules, policies, procedures and Standard Operating Guidelines.


11. May operate apparatus including ambulances safely, efficiently and in accordance with the District's rules, policies, procedures and Standard Operating Guidelines.


12. Maintain familiarity with maps and related streets and roads within the District's service area.


13. Participate in all scheduled and assigned training classes and prevention activities.


14. Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with District employees, volunteers, reserves, District residents, other governmental agencies and the community.


15. Maintain positive and constructive written and oral communication skills at all times.


16. Work well in a progressive, team-oriented environment.


17. Provide excellent service to the community.


18. Have a positive attitude and be a self-starter.


19. Promote a positive, professional image of the District always.


20. Perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications and Certification Requirements:

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D., associate degree in related field is preferred.


2. Three (3) years of emergency medical services experience within a private or fire-based emergency medical service agency.


3. Maintain all Fire District required certifications (Colorado State Paramedic, ACLS, BLS, PALS, PHTLS) and other training requirements.


4. Possess strong communication skills, including but not limited to the preparation of clear, concise, and accurate written reports, ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the position to include spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills and the ability to effectively present ideas and instructions.


5. Strong public relations and customer service skills, to include interactions with other agencies, co-workers, and the public in both routine and emergency settings.


6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, officials, and the public.


7. Familiarity and proficiency in the use of Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Systems, District records management software and other District software in relation to accounting and scheduling.


8. Ability to perform mathematical computations at a sufficient level of skill to timely and satisfactorily perform duties of a Paramedic.


9. Ability to work well under pressure and under stressful conditions.


10. Possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and an insurable driving record.


11. Possess and maintain current knowledge of the streets and road systems of the Fire District.


12. Possess and maintain District training on advanced life support with assigned District equipment.


13. Successfully complete the District’s EMS academy and  Paramedic Field Training Officer (FTO) program within the specified amount of time.


14. Earn and maintain Driver/Operator Utility certification within 12 months of entering a District approved Driver/Operator Utility course.\


15. Possess and maintain ICS-100, 200, 700, and 800 within 90 days of hire.


16. Successfully complete any District assigned National Wildfire and Wildland Training courses on an annual basis, as required.


17. Knowledge and understanding of the District’s rules, policies and procedures as they pertain to the Operations Division specifically and the District generally, including but not limited to the rules, policies and procedures contained in the District’s Member Handbook, Payroll Procedures Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.


18. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, routine correspondence, and memos, and ability to write basic reports and correspondence.


19. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to the public and other members of the organization.


20. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.


21. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the duties of the position.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

This position requires work in a variety of locations and conditions, including living quarters and office areas, in and around a wide variety of automotive, mechanical, chemical, and medical equipment or supplies, and emergency scenes of every type.

1. Strenuous physical activity under extreme adverse conditions will be required frequently.


2. Must be able to lift, move and carry objects up to one hundred (100) pounds.


3. This position requires standing, running, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing, pinching, gripping digging, spraying, reaching over head, reaching away from body, and repetitive motion.


4. Will be required to work in all weather conditions and in extreme temperatures.


5. Work may be performed under dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including, but not limited to, weakened structures, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, burning structures, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined spaces.


6. Work may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to, hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, which may require the use of Personal Protection Equipment.


7. Work may result in exposure to individuals or blood communicable diseases.


8. Work may result in exposure to high noise levels requiring the wearing of hearing protection


9. This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision.


10. This position will involve frequent periods of high physical, mental and/or emotional stress.


11. Must pass the District's physical fitness test annually as required by the District's Member Handbook and Standard Operating Guidelines.


12. Must have good close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus quickly. Must be able to wear all assigned personal protective.
