Job Description - Slitter Operator

Description

  

The Slitter Operator is responsible for setting up and maintaining slitting machinery to produce high-quality, precision-cut materials according to customer specifications and production standards. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and specifications to determine cutting requirements (e.g., width, length, tension).
  • Select, clean, and install appropriate spacers, knives, and other tooling on the slitting machine.
  • Load and thread parent rolls of material onto the unwind stand, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Adjust machine parameters (e.g., knife settings, tension, speed, pressure) to ensure precise cutting and optimal performance.
  • Monitor the slitting and rewinding process, making real-time adjustments as needed.
  • Perform regular quality checks on finished products, inspecting for defects (e.g., burrs, flatness, surface imperfections) and ensuring dimensional accuracy.
  • Identify and remove non-conforming materials or products.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and reports, including production data and quality logs.
  • Communicate equipment malfunctions or quality issues to supervisors or maintenance personnel in a timely manner.
  • Secure slit rolls on the re-coiler and ensure proper labeling and identification.
  • Package finished rolls according to specifications, arranging stacking panels as required.
  • Operate material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, cranes) as needed (certification may be required).
  • Adhere to all company safety regulations, guidelines, and procedures (e.g., lockout/tagout, PPE usage).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following good housekeeping practices.
  • Report all hazards, accidents, incidents, and near misses promptly.
  • May be responsible for the safety of other team members in the work area.
  • Collaborate effectively with other production team members, supervisors, and other departments to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • May assist in training new operators.

Requirements

 Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Vocational technical training or an Associate's degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Experience: Experience operating slitting machinery or similar equipment in a manufacturing environment is often preferred. Experience in metal manufacturing can be particularly beneficial.
  • Technical Skills: 
  • Proficient in reading and understanding written instructions, production drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to use and understand basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions) and measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, feeler gauges).
  • Physical Demands: 
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and manipulate materials (often up to 50 lbs. regularly, and sometimes heavier materials with assistance or equipment).
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, twist, and reach as needed.
  • Personal  Skills: 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, dependable, and a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing production needs.
  • Strong commitment to safety.

Work Environment: The work environment is typically a manufacturing or factory setting. It may involve exposure to:

  • Moving mechanical parts
  • Moderate to high noise levels (hearing protection often required)
  • Dust, fumes, and odors
  • Varying temperatures (cold to hot)
  • Requires wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
