Job Description

The Snow Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the operations of the Snow Safety teams and all comprehensive avalanche programing. This position manages the Snow Safety team to ensure the safety of employees and guests in avalanche terrain. This position is also responsible aligning with the Ski Patrol teams to create an efficient, well organized, and enjoyable environment for skiing guests and employees while consistently greeting and engaging our guests on all parts of the mountain.

This position reports to the Patrol Director and is a Full-Time, exempt seasonal role with the ability to work budgeted hours in the summer and shoulder seasons in preparation for each winter. This is a leadership role that will require a minimum of 5 days per week.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $65,000 to $85,000. Actual pay will be dependent on budget and experience, all our salaried roles are eligible for bonus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of all guests and employees in complex terrain.
  • Conduct avalanche hazard assessments and identify hazards on a daily basis to ensure the safe and timely opening of terrain
  • Organize and oversee all avalanche and hazard mitigation
  • Monitor weather, snowpack and terrain; maintain records of weather and mitigation strategies
  • Maintain area weather stations
  • Communicate avalanche observations and trends with Snow Safety team
  • Oversee closures and the ski area boundary in accordance with the Colorado Skier Safety Act
  • Purchase and manage inventory of PPE used in avalanche hazard mitigation
  • Maintain the department Avalanche Manual; stay abreast of industry standards and best practices
  • Hire, train and manage Snow Safety Team including daily scheduling and performance management
  • Oversee training and education including certifications for avalanche hazard mitigation.
  • Oversee Snow Safety budget and supplies including managing explosives in accordance with Federal and State guidelines
  • Maintain positive working relationship with all departments; communicate avalanche observations and trends with industry peers
  • Seek opportunities to enhance guest experiences, and initiate guest contact
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements

  • 3-5 years of previous snow safety experience required
  • AIRE Level 3, AAA AvPro or equivalent avalanche education required
  • Current CPR certification required
  • Minimum Outdoor Emergency Care or EMT required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert skier able to ski all terrain in all weather conditions for extended periods required
  • Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint; and Smart Mountain efficiencies.
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures 
  • Familiarity with company rules, regulations, and operational standards 
  • Proficient knowledge of industry regulations and how they affect business operations 
  • Skilled in effectively communicating both verbally and in writing with team members and guests in English  
  • Completes and manages tasks and goals efficiently and effectively 
  • Ability to engage with customers in a positive and helpful manner 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously without sacrificing quality 
  • Ability to make informed decisions quickly, considering both short-term and long-term impacts 
  • Ability to solve complex issues and find solutions in challenging situations 
  • Ability to be a team player, working collaboratively with others  
  • Ability to develop strong working relationship with those contacted in the course of work 
  • Ability to assess team performance, provide feedback, and implement development plans 
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and mentor teams and individuals to drive performance, engagement, and professional growth  

Additional Information

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, crawl, and kneel for extended periods of time
  • Regularly work in adverse conditions and required to use protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and may be required to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces
  • Frequently lift, push, carry or pull up to 100 pounds
