Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital    


The Mount Sinai Hospital is a 1,134-bed facility with an extensive outpatient and specialty care network and is the largest hospital in the Mount Sinai Health Care System. It offers comprehensive social work services and programming to meet the myriad needs of the diverse populations we serve. We believe that total patient care must emphasize the physical, emotional, and social needs of each patient and their care partners. Social Workers collaborate within interprofessional teams to serve patients and the larger community from both a micro and macro level including both direct care and prevention. Founded in 1907, the Department of Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the oldest hospital social work departments in the nation with over 450 licensed social workers employed across more than 65 different program/service areas. Employment in our department provides a pathway to LCSW licensure as well as access to a broad range of continuing education, professional development and extra-curricular opportunities.

 A multidisciplinary team approach is utilized to provide coordinated care to trans-identified patients who are interested in gender affirming medical interventions including gender-affirming surgeries. Classic gender affirming surgeries include facial feminizations surgeries, chest reconstruction, and genital reconstruction. 



Responsibilities

The social worker will complete full psychosocial assessments and work closely with the CTMS interdisciplinary team including the nurse coordinator, eligibility assistant, mental health professionals, primary care providers, surgeons, medical specialists, and outside service providers to support our trans patients through their medical transitions. The social worker will serve a pivotal role in facilitating appropriate medical interventions when required. Surgical support will include confirmation that patients have complete mental health evaluations, all necessary letters, pre-surgical treatments, and determination that post-surgical resources for care in the community are in place, collaborating with inpatient social workers, discharge planners, and outside agencies. The social worker will also be involved in developing and maintaining support groups for CTMS patients including for pre- and post-surgical patients, provide short term therapy, pre- and post-op, and will participate in CTMS team meetings, steering committee meetings, and community advisory board meetings. The Social Worker will also be responsible for administrative duties such as, but not limited to creating and organizing patient lists with up-to-date surgical information, co-leading case conference meetings to discuss high-risk patient issues and mediating between in-patient and out-patient teams to facilitate smooth and comprehensive care throughout the surgical process.

This position is based at Mount Sinai’s Downtown Practice located at 275 7th Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. 



Qualifications
  • Experience working with LGBTQIA+ individuals with specific familiarity with the transgender individuals.

  • Excellent engagement, organizational, collaborative, and clinical skills.
  • Excellent administrative and time-management skills.
  • A collaborative and flexible attitude to meet the changing needs of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

 

Compensation Statement

 

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $88,691.00 - $101,670.78 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
