The Psychiatric LCSW/LISW social worker is responsible for providing high quality patient care, displaying good skills in assessment, treatment planning, individual, group, family treatment, and discharge planning. He/she is expected to function well as a member of the multidisciplinary team and participate in the unit community relations program. Additionally, provides ancillary service to the Emergency and Psychiatry Departments in the evaluation of patients who present to the ED with psychiatric difficulties which may or may not require hospitalization. Will provide an expeditious approach in determining the appropriate disposition of the patient as well as improve the timeliness of patient assessment and treatment. Serves as a resource to patients’ families and the community.

Johns Hopkins is hiring for a Medical Social Worker with Psychiatric unit experience.

Schedule: 

  • 40 hours per week
  • Monday- Friday 8:30 am-5:00pm
  • Completes psychosocial evaluations on assigned patients meeting the institutions' compliance standard of 72 hours. Displays good interviewing, diagnostic, and report writing skills. Conducts therapies in accordance with patient diagnosis and needs with appropriate supervision.
  • Provides efficient discharge planning throughout the treatment planning process and according to specific assignment. Identifies patients with complex discharge planning needs. Works collaboratively with physician, patient, family members, and payers as appropriate to develop discharge plan.
  • Completes progress notes and assessments according to program procedure.
  • Assists in developing and formulating the individualized treatment plans for each patient and ensuring each patient is aware of such.
  • Conducts individual psychotherapy sessions in accordance with state/regulatory standards, displaying good theoretical knowledge of group therapy principles and good group therapy technique.
  •  Engages in timely, efficient discharge planning. Works in close conjunction with patient, family, nursing staff, and attending physician. Shows good knowledge of referral/placement process and available community resources.
  • Completes progress notes and discharge plans in a timely, professional, high quality fashion.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate behavioral conditions requiring crisis intervention services.
  • Conduct behavioral assessments using formalized screening tools or protocols in conjunction with Department of Psychiatry policies and procedures.
  • Upon completion of the psychiatric crisis intake assessment and disposition plan, clinical information will be communicated to the ED physician.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment recommendations incorporating the least restrictive approach. Communicate effectively regarding patients to treating ED staff, psychiatrist-on-call, and other involved individuals in the hospital and community.
  • Integrate current research into clinical practice at all levels. Promotes the utilization of current research by all staff members as a guide to daily practice.
  • Interact with the clinical team to advance the quality of care.
  • Participate in the quality improvement process for all Psychiatric and Emergency Department policies and procedures. Identifies learning needs and goals, sets a plan and timeline for resolution.
  • Maintain and update training in assessment of high-risk psychiatric patients and crisis intervention techniques.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • An in-depth knowledge of and clinical skills in the provision of psychiatric care/treatment crisis intervention assessment and disposition planning for complex psychiatric patient populations.
  • Knowledge of patient triage (emergent, urgent, and non-urgent assessments) and Emergency nursing highly encouraged.
  • Ability to teach, and impart knowledge to others: i.e., staff, patients, and families, in a professional and caring manner. Ability to express one’s ideas verbally and in writing, to include providing comprehensive and accurate reports and proposals.
  • Employee must demonstrate such skills including flexibility, resourcefulness, independent and thoughtful reasoning, calm demeanor, and professional approach to the institution and the patients served. Must be able to tolerate working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work as a contributing member of the interdisciplinary team are mandatory skills for this position.
  • Experience in a computerized environment required.
  • A LGSW in the District of Columbia. Graduate of an accredited program for social work services or counseling.
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or sociology, gerontology, special education, rehabilitation counseling, or psychology from an accredited school.
  • Experience in psychiatric social work or counseling experience with a focus in adult, geriatric and crisis management.
  • Current CPR Certification required.
