Job Description - Sonic Driller

Anderson Environmental Contracting, LLC (AEC) is seeking an experienced Sonic Driller to join our Environmental and Infrastructure Drilling Division.


The Sonic Driller is responsible for safely operating sonic drilling rigs, leading the assigned drilling crew, coordinating daily field activities, and ensuring drilling operations are completed in accordance with project requirements. This position oversees drilling activities from site setup through borehole or well completion and abandonment.


AEC is a growing environmental contracting firm based in Southwest Washington. Our projects are located throughout the Pacific Northwest, and regular out-of-area and overnight travel is required.

Position Summary


The Sonic Driller leads the drilling crew and coordinates the personnel, equipment, tooling, and materials required to complete assigned projects safely and efficiently. This individual is responsible for operating and maintaining drilling equipment, managing daily site activities, monitoring field productivity, and completing all required project and safety documentation.


The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical drilling knowledge, sound judgment, effective crew leadership, and a consistent commitment to safe work practices.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Safely operate sonic drilling rigs and associated support equipment.

  • Lead and supervise the assigned drilling crew.

  • Coordinate drilling activities from site setup and implementation through completion and abandonment.

  • Review drilling plans, project requirements, and site conditions before beginning work.

  • Organize and prepare drilling equipment, tooling, materials, and supplies.

  • Direct the safe setup, operation, maintenance, and breakdown of drilling equipment.

  • Assign daily crew responsibilities and monitor productivity and work quality.

  • Manage daily worksite activities and coordinate with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and other site personnel.

  • Accurately record crew hours, equipment usage, materials, production, and other project information.

  • Complete daily drilling reports, well logs, logbooks, repair orders, equipment and vehicle inspection reports, and tailgate documentation.

  • Conduct and document required safety meetings, job safety analyses, equipment inspections, and site-specific training.

  • Identify and promptly report unsafe conditions, equipment problems, incidents, injuries, and other irregularities.

  • Inspect drilling rigs, vehicles, tooling, and support equipment regularly.

  • Coordinate routine maintenance and promptly report necessary equipment repairs.

  • Monitor project costs and field productivity within the responsibilities assigned to the Driller.

  • Maintain all licenses, certifications, and continuing education required for the position.

  • Perform hands-on drilling and field activities as necessary.

  • Comply with company policies, project requirements, and applicable safety and environmental regulations.

  • Perform other duties and project assignments as needed.


Required Qualifications



  • At least five years of experience in the drilling industry.

  • At least three years of experience independently operating sonic drilling rigs.

  • Demonstrated experience leading or supervising a drilling crew.

  • Current driller’s license in the applicable state or states, or the ability to obtain the required license.

  • Strong working knowledge of sonic drilling methods, equipment, tooling, and field procedures.

  • Ability to read and understand drilling plans, specifications, well designs, and project documentation.

  • Knowledge of applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to maintain accurate drilling, safety, equipment, and personnel records.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather and site conditions.

  • Willingness to work early mornings, extended shifts, and variable schedules based on project requirements.

  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Pacific Northwest, including overnight and extended out-of-area assignments.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Experience with environmental, geotechnical, or infrastructure drilling projects.

  • Experience with additional drilling methods, including hollow-stem auger and direct push.

  • Mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting or maintaining drilling equipment.

  • Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER training with an 8-Hour Refresher.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Forklift or other applicable equipment-operation certifications.
