Job Description - Spanish Teacher

Pope Saint John Paul II Preparatory School is seeking a dynamic and collaborative Spanish Teacher to join our faith-based college preparatory community. The ideal candidate will be creative, adaptable, and recognize that language and cultural learning are fun and joyous endeavors.. This position is an exciting opportunity for educators who are enthusiastic about preparing students for college, teaching Spanish using immersive lessons and authentic resources that contribute to a collaborative learning environment rooted in Catholic values.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and academically rigorous classroom rooted in the mission and values of a Catholic college preparatory school.
  • Teach Spanish 90%+ of the class period in Spanish, even from the earliest levels.
  • Deliver immersive lessons utilizing comprehensible input, so that even beginner level students can understand them when they are teaching in the 90%.
  • Use authentic materials (sources created by Spanish speakers for Spanish speakers) as the driving force and main texts behind lessons. These materials come in the forms of articles, infographics, news reports, short stories, poems, videos, songs, and more.
  • Implement the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
  • Unite behind the World Languages Mission Statement:
    • The World Language Department at JPII creates confident communicators who enjoy language and cultures. Students are taught and assessed according to the latest research, and are well prepared for the AP course and beyond.
  • Actively participate in departmental and interdisciplinary collaboration, including curriculum development, collaborative teaching and assessment, and departmental initiatives.
  • Communicate regularly with students and parents to provide feedback and support academic growth.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school, including liturgies, retreats, faculty meetings, advisories, houses and other community events.
  • Participate in an extracurricular activity to engage with the students outside of the classroom.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish or a related field with significant coursework in Spanish.
  • Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license, preferably with certification in Spanish.  If not a licensed teacher, a commitment to licensure within 3 years of employment.
  • Demonstrated experience with or a strong interest in Immersive Language Learning
  • A commitment to collaboration with both faculty and students, including a willingness to grow professionally and contribute to a team environment.
  • Support for the Catholic mission of the school and a desire to model faith-based values in educational practice.
