Job Description - Special Assets Manager

Position Summary 


The Special Assets Manager, is accountable for the end-to-end management, control, and disposition of high-risk assets (otherwise known as special assets), including repossessions, liquidations, mortgage loss mitigation, bankruptcy, and probate. This role owns the design, execution, and monitoring of internal controls across the special assets lifecycle to ensure regulatory compliance, financial integrity, timely loss recognition, and commercially reasonable recovery outcomes.


This position serves as the primary control owner for vendor oversight, inventory governance, charge-off timeliness, and documentation supporting recovery decisions. The Special Assets Manager is expected to proactively identify risk, escalate exceptions, and maintain TTCU-controlled visibility over all assets and processes under their scope.


Supervises: Repossession, Bankruptcy, and Mortgage Loss Mitigation Teams.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities


Risk Ownership & Internal Controls


• Own and maintain internal control frameworks governing repossessed and distressed assets from default through disposition.


• Ensure TTCU-controlled, system-driven visibility into asset status, location, aging, and disposition across all Special Assets portfolios.


• Design and enforce exception reporting, escalation thresholds, and management review processes for aging, stalled, or high-risk assets.


• Ensure timely and accurate loss recognition, charge-off execution, and recovery reporting in accordance with regulatory requirements.


Repossession & Liquidation Management


• Govern the repossession-to-sale pipeline, including inventory aging, reconditioning decisions, sale method selection, and proceeds reconciliation.


• Ensure all liquidation decisions are supported by documentation demonstrating commercial reasonableness and protection of member and credit union interests.


• Implement controls to prevent prolonged aging, undocumented disposition decisions, or loss of sale proceeds.


Mortgage Loss Mitigation, Bankruptcy & Probate


• Oversee complex borrower resolutions including foreclosure alternatives, bankruptcy coordination, and probate administration.


• Ensure legal timelines, documentation, and borrower rights are properly managed and tracked.


• Coordinate with internal legal, external counsel, and servicing partners to support compliant and timely resolution.


Regulatory Compliance & Audit Readiness


• Ensure Special Assets activities comply with NCUA requirements, internal policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.


• Serve as the primary point of accountability for audit, exam, and management inquiries related to Special Assets.


• Maintain documentation, reporting, and controls sufficient to defend TTCU’s actions in regulatory reviews, legal disputes, and member complaints.


Leadership & Team Management


• Provide clear direction, expectations, and accountability for all staff.


• Maintain documented workflows, role clarity, and performance standards for all functions.


• Proactively identify skill gaps, training needs, and structural improvements to support a high-performing, risk-aware team.


• Address performance and conduct issues promptly and consistently.


Minimum Qualifications


Educational Requirements


High School Diploma or GED required.


Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or other related discipline preferred.


Equivalent level of professional work experience may be considered


Certificates/Licenses


Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. 


Must have a clean driving record; an annual MVR may be pulled to ensure compliance. 


Experience 


• 5+ years of experience in consumer loan collections or recovery, with evidence of progressively increasing responsibility. 


Preferred Experience 


• Formal supervisory or management experience leading a collections or repossession team. 


• Experience working in a credit union or community banking environment. 


• Familiarity with Temenos Collections, Akuvo, FIS, or similar collections management systems. 


• Background in managing vendor relationships, including repossession companies, attorneys, and action houses.


• Leadership style emphasizes accountability, team culture, and cross-department collaboration.


Additional Requirements


Job Knowledge 


• Demonstrated leadership ability, either through formal supervisory experience or informal leadership such as mentoring peers, leading projects, or training others. 


• Strong knowledge of collection processes from early delinquency through post charge-off. 


• Strong understanding of repossession, liquidation, foreclosure alternatives, bankruptcy, and probate processes.


• Understanding of applicable laws and regulations, including FDCPA, FCRA, UDAAP, and NCUA guidance. 


• Proficiency with collections platforms, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint). 


• Strong documentation, reporting, and executive communication skills.


Interpersonal Skills 


• Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to balance firmness and member service.


• Willingness to escalate issues, challenge assumptions, and enforce standards, even in difficult situations.

• Private work area, i.e., office


Physical Demands


• Must be able to remain in a stationary position (e.g., sitting at a desk) for extended periods.


• Occasional movement around the office to attend meetings or collaborate with team members.


• Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment as needed. 


Travel


• Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and industry related events.
