Job Description - Special Education Teacher

Special Education Teacher


Salary:$48,000 based on experience
Start Date: August 1, 2026
Reports To: Director of Special Education / Principal (as assigned)

Position Summary


The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and services for students with disabilities, ensuring access to rigorous, standards-aligned instruction in the least restrictive environment. The Special Education Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs while supporting student growth academically, socially, and behaviorally.


The ideal candidate is an organized, student-centered educator skilled in differentiation, progress monitoring, and compliance.


Key Responsibilities


Instruction & Student Support



  • Provide direct special education services (push-in, pull-out, co-teaching, or resource) based on student IEPs

  • Deliver individualized and small-group instruction aligned to IEP goals and grade-level standards

  • Differentiate instruction, provide accommodations/modifications, and support access to the general education curriculum

  • Implement evidence-based interventions and support plans, including behavior supports when appropriate


IEP Development & Compliance



  • Develop and manage IEPs, including present levels, goals, service minutes, accommodations, and progress monitoring plans

  • Lead and participate in IEP meetings, ensuring family partnership and clear communication

  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, state regulations, timelines, and required documentation

  • Maintain accurate records, service logs, and progress reports


Collaboration & Teaming



  • Collaborate with general education teachers to plan inclusive instruction and implement accommodations

  • Coordinate with related service providers (speech, OT, PT, counseling, etc.) and support integrated service delivery

  • Participate in PLCs, student support meetings, and MTSS processes to address student needs

  • Support families with updates, resources, and ongoing communication


Assessment & Progress Monitoring



  • Use data from assessments, student work, and progress monitoring tools to adjust instruction and supports

  • Track and report progress toward IEP goals and academic outcomes

  • Support special education evaluations and eligibility processes (as assigned)


Culture & Classroom Management



  • Build a positive, structured learning environment using consistent routines and expectations

  • Support student social-emotional growth and self-advocacy skills

  • Contribute to schoolwide culture and student support systems


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred)

  • Valid Special Education teaching certification/licensure (or eligibility)

  • Knowledge of IDEA and state special education compliance requirements

  • Strong instructional skills in differentiation, intervention, and inclusive practices

  • Strong organization, documentation, and communication skills


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with co-teaching and inclusion models

  • Experience writing strong standards-aligned IEP goals and implementing progress monitoring systems

  • Experience supporting students with a range of needs (mild/moderate to intensive)

  • Familiarity with behavior intervention plans (BIPs), FBAs, and MTSS

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus (if relevant)
