Job Description - Special Projects Sanitation (Temporary)

General Definition of Work


Performs intermediate technical work related to the operation of environment programs and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Pretreatment Coordinator-Lab Supervisor.


 


Qualification Requirements


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Essential Functions


·         Assists with distribution system sampling, plant operation system sampling, river and reservoir water sampling and additional miscellaneous field investigations and water quality tasks;


·         Operates sampling equipment such as ISCO or HACH sample collection devices (composite or grab samples), may use chlorine test kits, pH and temperature gauges and/or data sets to measure and record water quality properties.


·         Completes paperwork and follows RSD standard operating procedures (SOP’s) to prepare for sample collection, chain of custody and documentation of water quality properties.


·         Performs miscellaneous office tasks, such as mapping sampling points, working with data and reports, filing and reproducing documents, operating office equipment.


·         Data input and organization of data required, data analysis skills preferred. Presents periodic sample analysis data findings to a group.


·         Prepares samples using appropriate preservation techniques for storage, in-house analysis and/or shipment to a contract laboratory for analysis.


·         Additionally, performs maintenance and clean-up of sampling equipment as needed.


  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Some knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and processes, and an ability to follow EPA sampling and laboratory protocol.; some knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the department; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to use laboratory and related equipment and to compute and record test results; ability to perform research work on problems of a chemical nature; ability to prepare clear and accurate scientific reports including suitable graphic representations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.


 


Education and Experience


College student majoring in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field and considerable experience working within a wastewater treatment plant facility, collecting and testing lab samples, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


 


Physical Requirements


This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;




 


hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).


 


Special Requirements


Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.
