The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Contact Lens Optometrist with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

The Specialty Contact Lens Optometrist practices optometry with an emphasis on fitting specialty contact lenses which may include scleral lenses and the PROSE lens. The optometrists perform ocular examinations to detect disease and defects in vision. Patients are managed refractively and therapeutically within the scope of practice allowed by the Florida Board of Optometry.

The Optometrist examines patients’ eyes to detect vision problems, diseases, and other abnormal conditions. Moreover, the incumbent prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, and drugs to treat eye disorders.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Tests, interviews, and examines patients having vision problems.

Utilizes optometric instruments and equipment to identify patients' visual acuity, amplitude of accommodation, and refractive state and biocular coordination, at far and near points.

Employs low vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses for correction of sub-normal vision.

Determines proper remedial alternatives and discusses and interprets findings with patients.

Refers patients with indications of possible pathological conditions to an Ophthalmologist.

Consults with an Ophthalmologist on more complex cases.

Calculates proper prescription employing applicable formulas.

Instructs resident ophthalmologists and paramedical personnel in the field of ophthalmic instrumentation and procedure.

Assists with the development and implementation of the optometry budget.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Doctor of Optometry (O.D.)

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Commitment to the University’s core values.

Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

Additional Position Essential Requirements

There are four essential aspects of the optometric position:

Clinical (90%) –

The optometrist performs ocular examinations on patients of all ages, including children and the elderly, in order to detect, diagnose, treat, manage and refer (when appropriate) disease and defects in vision. The optometrist will make a final deposition on all patients. The optometrist may also assist in the Vision Correction Center performing pre and post-operative care.

Academic (5%) –

The optometrist will experience academic growth by attending lectures and utilizing library facilities in addition to learning on-the-job from other members of the eye care team.

Teaching (2.5%) –

The optometrist will give formal classroom instruction in optometric subjects when requested and will assist all members of the eye care team by answering their questions regarding optometric subject matter. The optometrist is also encouraged to participate in optometric continuing education courses at a local, state and national level.

Research (2.5%) –

The optometrist may participate in occasional research projects approved by the Director of Optometric Services and appropriate faculty.
