Job Description - Specimen Resolution Specialist

GENERAL SUMMARY

Responsible for investigating and resolving issues that arise during the test entry portion (pre-analytical phase) of processing specimens. Issues are received, tracked and addressed immediately so that processing of specimens with issues can occur in a timely manner.

Location: Rancho Bernardo, CA 

Schedule: Full-time | Tuesday 6:00am to 2:30pm; Wednesday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm, Saturday 8:00am to 4:30pm. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following are intended to be examples of the accountabilities for which the person in this position is responsible. LABORATORY RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Investigating/resolving pre-analytical specimen issues identified by Laboratory Specimen Processors or Lab staff.
  • Document and ensure all information is properly routed to Specimen Resolution Office Staff.
  • Inventory Control of all specimens placed on Hold Testing.
  • Ensure that each issue identified is handled/resolved in accordance with the current SOP.
  • Processes all finalized resolutions received from Specimen Resolution Office Staff in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all specimens that receive final resolution are accessioned, aliquoted and prepared for testing through appropriate channels (i.e., Hamilton and Olympus).
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pursues educational opportunities to maintain advanced and up-to-date knowledge of HIPAA, safety, SOP and all other issues related to the Specimen Resolution Lab Team.
  • Exercises influence and takes collaborative action to proactively coordinate efforts between other departments; able to
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in the face of adverse conditions to effectively resolve specimen issues.
  • Able to prioritize workload and exhibit a sense of urgency when approaching deadlines.
  • Ensures best utilization of resources and effective achievement of results by “bringing together” everyone’s contribution to the achievement of the department and company goals.
  • Establishes strong organizational skills in order to function effectively in a fast-paced environment utilizing teamwork, integrity and accountability.
  • Knowledge of developing a working partnership with upper management as well as cross department management teams.
  • Performs all other related duties as required and assigned and understands that the items in this description are not all-inclusive.

EDUCATION

  • Associate degree preferred; combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • High School Diploma or GED minimum requirement.

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory required.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication and active listening skills.
  • Strong attention to detail a must.
  • Strong problem solving capabilities.
  • Time management skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Experience in SOP or Policy adherence to meet the needs of the business and satisfy state and federal regulations.
  • Strong email communication a must.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, at least 4 hours but up to 8+ hours in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively handle multiple and shifting priorities without having an adverse effect on specimen processing.
  • Must have strong computer skills in MS Office with the ability to learn company laboratory information system in a timely manner.
  • Ability to ensure HIPAA, Confidentiality and Compliance policy, procedures, and standards are always adhered to.
  • Ability to ensure administrative, physical and technical cyber security controls are always adhered to.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sitting (40%), walking (20%), standing (40%), and lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Physical requirements will vary depending on departmental needs.
  • The employee is expected to read and understand SOPs.
  • The employee should be able to convert SOP instructions into work-related tasks.
  • The employee must be able to perform simple calculations as required in SOPs.
  • The employee must be able to use judgment when there is a deviation in the system and effectively communicate any discrepancy to his/her Supervisor.

ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The employee is regularly exposed to a fast-paced environment, therefore must be able to thrive in this type of setting.
  • Withstand moderate amounts of stress and the ability to work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate.
  • Must be able to work an extended schedule as needed.

Due to occupational work with saliva/oral swab specimens, there is a low risk of exposure to tuberculosis. As part of Millennium Health’s Tuberculosis Exposure Plan, all laboratory personnel have the opportunity to be screened for tuberculosis free of charge.

POTENTIAL HIRING RANGE:

  • $38,000.00 - $41,600.00
