Job Description - Spray Technician/Golf Course Maintenance


  

Position Summary: 

The Golf Course Spray Technician is responsible for the precise and safe application of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other turf care products to maintain the health, appearance, and playability of all golf course areas, including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and surrounding grounds. This role requires a strong understanding of turfgrass science, pest identification, and all environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

Chemical Application:

o Prepare, calibrate, and operate various spray equipment (e.g., boom sprayers, walk-behind sprayers, hand sprayers) for accurate and efficient application of liquid and granular products.

o Apply fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and other plant protectants according to product labels, golf course superintendent's instructions, and established Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plans.

o Monitor turf conditions regularly to identify and diagnose pest, disease, and weed issues.

o Maintain detailed and accurate records of all applications.

o Ensure proper mixing, handling, storage, and disposal of all chemicals in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, TDA).

Equipment Operation & Maintenance:

o Perform routine safety inspections, cleaning, and preventative maintenance on all spray equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

o Troubleshoot and make minor repairs to spray equipment as needed.

o Operate other golf course maintenance equipment as required (e.g., mowers, utility vehicles, aerators, spreaders).

Turf Management & General Course Maintenance:

o Assist with general golf course maintenance tasks as directed, which may include:

§ Mowing greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.

§ Watering and irrigating turf, adjusting irrigation systems as needed.

§ Aerating, topdressing, and verticutting.

§ Grading and preparing soil, laying sod, planting vegetative material, and seeding.

§ Changing golf cups and moving tee markers.

§ Clearing/Cleaning various debris on the course.

§ Assisting with special projects and course improvements

Safety & Compliance:

o Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including always wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during chemical handling and application.

o Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in a clean, organized, and compliant manner.

o Stay current with industry trends, new products, and best practices in golf course chemical applications and turf management.

o Participate in required training and continuing education to maintain licensing and enhance skills.

 

Communication & Teamwork:

o Communicate effectively with the Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and other team members regarding course conditions, application schedules, and any issues observed.

o Work independently and as part of a team to achieve departmental goals.


Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in golf course maintenance or a related landscaping/turf management field, with specific experience in spray applications preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass drug and background screening.
  • Strong knowledge of turfgrass varieties, common golf course pests (insects, diseases, weeds), and their control methods.
  • Ultradwarf Bermudagrass (Champion) experience.
  • Proficiency in calibrating and operating various spray and granular application equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret product labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS), and other technical documents.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for product mixing and application rates.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and to perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) and perform manual tasks such as bending, stooping, kneeling, and  standing for long durations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Category 3A - Ornamental and Turf) is required or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Certificate or degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced irrigation systems.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment repair.
