Job Description - Staff Accountant II

Job Summary:



The Staff Accountant II will play a key role in supporting the financial operations of the healthcare system by independently handling complex accounting tasks, preparing and maintaining financial records, and assisting with month-end and year-end closings. This role requires a solid understanding of accounting principles, experience in financial reporting, and the ability to analyze financial data. The Staff Accountant II will work closely with the Controller and department leaders to ensure compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in financial reporting. This is an in-office position at our office in Vadnais Heights, MN.



Key Responsibilities:




  1. General Ledger Management:

    1. Prepare, record, and verify complex journal entries and reconciliations as part of monthly and year-end closings.

    2. Conduct detailed account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and propose solutions to ensure timely issue resolution.

    3. Manage and maintain the chart of accounts, supporting process improvements in the ledger.

    4. Safeguards assets through effective methods, policies and procedures, and established controls.

    5. Acquires and disseminates knowledge of the organization’s assets and debts.



  2. Financial Reporting:

    1. Prepare monthly financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.

    2. Analyze financial results and variances, provide insights and commentary, and assist in preparing executive summaries.

    3. Collaborate with department heads for budgetary input and support the budgeting and forecasting processes.



  3. Accounts Payable & Receivable Support:

    1. Assist in monitoring cash flow, receivables aging, and expense tracking to optimize financial management.



  4. Departmental:

    1. Attends and participates in-service training and seminars and required.

    2. Ensure financial reporting deadlines are met and that all relationships with vendors and employees are maintained at an acceptable level.

    3. Maintains a respectful relationship with all stakeholders, including patients, referral sources, and community at large.

    4. Always maintains a positive working relationship with staff.

    5. Ensures compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including HIPPA and other privacy regulations.

    6. Assists the Controller as needed.



  5. Compliance and Audit Support:

    1. Ensure all accounting activities comply with GAAP, healthcare regulations, and internal policies.

    2. Prepare documentation and provide support for external financial statement reviews.



  6. Implement internal controls and assist in evaluating accounting policies and procedures to maintain regulatory compliance.



Education and Experience:



Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.


2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare or regulated industry, with a focus on general ledger management and financial reporting.


Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and standard accounting practices.



Skills and Abilities:



Technical Proficiency: Must have some experience in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Oracle, SAP, or healthcare-specific ERP systems) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial modeling). 


Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in all financial activities.


Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and diligence in all aspects of accounting and reporting.


Time Management: Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.



Preferred Qualifications:



Experience in healthcare, with familiarity with healthcare-specific financial regulations and compliance requirements.


Advanced certifications or working towards certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA, MBA) are a plus.
