Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Counselor provides mental health, consultation, crisis intervention, training and outreach services at CAPS. 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1.Direct Mental Health Services (70%): Provide some individual and group psychotherapy; a significant portion of direct services will be providing brief screening appointments for new clients, encouraging them to make use of appropriate resources on- or off-campus, and following up with these clients periodically; perform crisis intervention and crisis consultation for the campus; provide mental health assessment and evaluation services; make reasonable adjustments to scheduled appointments to meet requests for services; follow CAPS policies and procedures; adhere to appropriate ethical and professional standards.   

2. Case Management (20%): Keep accurate and timely records of appointments (e.g., intake notes, progress notes, termination summaries) using the online Titanium record-keeping software; maintain confidentiality of records; consult with other professionals as needed to coordinate treatment; participate in regular CAPS clinical supervision meetings; follow instructions of clinical supervisor; consult with parents and on- and off-campus professionals with appropriate authorization; inform supervisor as soon as possible of students who may be at serious risk.

3. Consultation & Training (5%): Provide consultation, education, and outreach services to faculty, staff, students and parents on developmental, mental health, and harm-reduction/prevention issues; prepare and provide training seminars to university groups (e.g., residence life staff; academic advisors; first-year students)

4. Other Duties (5%): Cooperate with accountability and data collection systems; participate in University-wide and Division of Student Development programs (when possible); develop and maintain a network of effective working relationships with faculty and staff from other offices and departments; accept delegated responsibilities for special projects or committee assignments, as requested by supervisor. CONTACTS: 

  • Students – provide crisis & mental health assessment, counseling, consultation, and referrals

  • Student Development staff – consult on student concerns & coordinate referrals

  • Dean’s office staff – consult on student concerns & coordinate referrals

  • Faculty – consult on student concerns & coordinate referrals

  • Health & Well-being staff – consult on student concerns & coordinate referrals

  • Student Health Center staff – coordinate treatment & referrals

  • UR Police – training on mental health issues & coordinate crisis response

  • Off-campus medical & mental health professionals - coordinate treatment & referrals

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Talk to students and others while seated in an office setting

  • Attend meetings and training activities at other locations on campus

  • Handle pressure & maintain composure during emergency situations

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills & ability

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of the CAPS staff team

  • Demonstrated multicultural competencies

  • Ability to form effective working relationships with individuals across lines of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, and sexual orientation

  • Professional knowledge of adult and college student mental health issues

  • Professional knowledge of mental health assessment

  • Professional knowledge of suicide assessment, crisis assessment, crisis management and referral

  • Knowledge of multicultural issues

  • Knowledge of college student development issues

  • Ability to read & complete clinical notes and records in a timely fashion using the computerized Titanium record-keeping system

  • Ability to learn & use the computerized Titanium scheduling system for scheduling appointments, meetings and other activities

  • Ability to learn and use word-processing and spreadsheet software.

Education & experience

  • Master's degree in counseling, Psychology, or closely related field required

  • Licensed social worker or licensed/license eligible as an LPC, or Clinical Psychologist in the State of Virginia

  • At least 1 year of experience providing mental health counseling services to young adults (18-25 years old) required

  • Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity related to anti-racism, social justice, multicultural issues, and ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups

Preferred experiences include any of the following:

  • 1 or more years’ experience working in a college or university counseling center

  • Interest & experience in brief therapy modalities

  • Interest & experience in DBT, ACT, or similar treatment modalities

  • Interest & experience working with underrepresented populations

Work Schedule:

  • Part-time; 10-month position (August 2026 to May 2027)

  • No more than 15-20 hrs. per week

Pay Grade:

Grade 7 ($27.89 to $36.96 per hour)
