We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do \u2013 and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.\n\nJob Summary:\n\nWe are seeking a Staff Data Scientist to lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced AI systems, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), semantic knowledge bases, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) server ecosystems. \n \nThis role requires deep technical expertise combined with architectural leadership, ownership of end-to-end AI systems, and the ability to drive best practices across teams. You will play a critical role in shaping our AI strategy and delivering scalable, production-grade intelligent systems.\n\nJob Description:\n\nEssential Responsibilities: \n\n * Lead and manage data science projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business goals.\n * Develop and maintain data models, algorithms, and reporting systems to support data analysis and decision-making.\n * Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that drive strategic initiatives.\n * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and provide actionable insights.\n * Ensure data quality and integrity through regular audits and validation processes.\n * Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.\n\n\n\nMinimum Qualifications:\n\n * 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor\u2019s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.\n\n\n\nAdditional Responsibilities \u0026 Preferred Qualifications:\n\nResponsibilities:\n\n * Lead the design and architecture of end-to-end AI systems, including: RAG pipeline, Semantic knowledge bases, Vector search and retrieval systems\n\n * Define and implement best practices for LLM-based systems, including prompting, evaluation, and system design\n\n * Architect, build, and scale MCP servers and integrate them into broader AI and product ecosystems\n\n * Drive development of LLMOps frameworks, including evaluation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of AI systems\n\n * Design and optimize retrieval pipelines, including embeddings, indexing, ranking, and hybrid search\n\n * Mentor and guide junior data scientists and engineers on AI system design and statistical rigor\n\n * Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and leadership to translate business problems into scalable AI solutions\n\n * Establish metrics, experimentation frameworks, and statistical validation approaches for AI system performance\n\n\n\n\nRequired Skills \u0026 Qualifications:\n\n * Experience leading large-scale AI initiatives or platforms\n\n * Familiarity with fine-tuning techniques (LoRA, PEFT) and model customization\n\n * Experience with multi-agent systems and orchestration frameworks\n\n * Background in search, recommendation systems, or knowledge graphs\n\n * Experience in enterprise or regulated environments (e.g., fintech)\n\n\n\n\n \nAI / Systems Architecture\n\n * Deep expertise in: RAG architectures and retrieval systems, Semantic search and knowledge systems, Vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, FAISS, Chroma)\n\n * Strong experience with LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source models)\n\n * Proven experience designing and scaling MCP servers or similar AI system infrastructure\n\n * Experience with agent frameworks and tool/skill orchestration\n\n\n\n\n \nLLMOps / Production Infrastructure\n\n * Strong experience launching production AI Agents systems, including:\n\n * Experiment tracking and evaluation (LangSmith, Weights \u0026 Biases, MLflow)\n\n * Observability and monitoring (latency, token usage, system reliability)\n\n * Evaluation frameworks for RAG (faithfulness, hallucination detection, groundedness)\n\n\n\n\n \nEmbeddings \u0026 Retrieval Optimization\n\n * Deep understanding of embedding models and semantic similarity\n\n * Expertise in improving retrieval quality via:\n\n * Hybrid search (vector + keyword/BM25)\n\n * Reranking models (Cohere Rerank, Hugging Face cross-encoders)\n\n * Advanced chunking, indexing, and document processing strategies\n\n * Proven ability to optimize end-to-end RAG system performance\n\n\n\n\n \nPrompting \u0026 LLM Engineering\n\nAdvanced expertise in:\n\n * Prompt engineering and optimization\n\n * Context design and grounding techniques\n\n * Systematic evaluation and iteration of LLM outputs\n\n\n\n\n \nData Science \u0026 Statistical Leadership \n\nStrong foundation in:\n\n * Probability and statistics\n\n * Hypothesis testing and experimentation\n\n * Causal inference and experimental design\n\n * Experience defining metrics and evaluation frameworks for complex AI systems\n\n\n\n\n \nProgramming \u0026 System Design\n\n * Strong proficiency in Python\n\n * Experience with:\n\n * ML/AI frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face)\n\n * Data processing (Pandas, NumPy, Spark)\n\n * Backend/API development (FastAPI or similar)\n\n * Solid understanding of distributed systems and scalable architecture\n\n\n\n\n \nWhat Success Looks Like\n\n * Architect and deliver scalable, production-grade AI systems\n\n * Establish best practices for RAG, LLMOps, and retrieval optimization\n\n * Drive measurable improvements in system accuracy, latency, and reliability\n\n * Influence technical direction and elevate AI capabilities across the organization\n\n\n\n\nSubsidiary:\n\nPayPal\n\nTravel Percent:\n\n0\n\n-\n\nThe base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring.
