We manage Venmo\u0027s infrastructure including operations, automation, security, compliance, and release engineering, with a focus on Cloud Engineering integrated with SRE and DevOps. \n \nOn DevOps, we oversee CI/CD infrastructure, develop secure pipelines, implement self-service secret management, create development environments, and establish microservices scaffolding and testing frameworks. System quality is paramount\u2014infrastructure must be automatically delivered, thoroughly tested, and scanned for vulnerabilities. \n \nAs Staff Engineer, you\u0027ll lead major domain initiatives and join the architect group defining the company\u0027s technical future. You\u0027ll be a hands-on contributor who teaches by example, mentoring engineers and product owners on development best practices using our systems. We have significant decision-making independence with accountability for results.\n\nJob Description:\n\nEssential Responsibilities: \n\n * Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system\n * Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow\n * Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives\n * Proactively improves existing structures \u0026 processes\n * Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems\n * Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions\n * Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor\n * Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations\n\n\n\nExpected Qualifications:\n\n * 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor\u2019s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.\n\n\n\nAdditional Responsibilities \u0026 Preferred Qualifications:\n\nOur technical stack: \n\nAWS, EKS, Landing Zone, GitHub Actions, AWS CDK(TypeScript), Terraform, Datadog, Bash, Python, Go \n\n\nAs a Staff Engineer, you will:\n\n * Contribute and help drive the strategic direction to one or more of our domains, leading initiatives in your area of expertise. \n\n\n\n * Act as a hands-on contributor writing and reviewing code, while leading by example\n\n\n\n * Mentor senior and junior engineers\n\n\n\n * Enjoy a high degree of independence in decision-making while being accountable for results of yourself and your team\n\n\n\n * Be part of a team dedicated to driving the scalability and reliability of Venmo\u2019s AWS cloud infrastructure\n\n\n\n * Provide guidance, thought leadership, and mentorship to application teams to build and strengthen their cloud competencies\n\n\n\n\nWhat You\u2019ll Do\n\n * Lead major initiatives end-to-end: internal teams rarely have dedicated project managers You will define the design, identify stakeholders, navigate risks and changes, coordinate colleagues\u0027 work, implement solutions, and be accountable for timely and quality project delivery.\n\n\n\n * Continually raise the bar through assisting fellow engineers in developing and delivering their code more efficiently and securely.\n\n\n\n * Troubleshoot incidents, identify root causes, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.\n\n\n\n * Coach and mentor engineers on design principles and best practices.\n\n\n\n * Recognize, validate, and evangelize emerging technologies and architectures that align with business objectives. \n\n\n\n * Strategically and tactically leading by example, making meaningful contributions to the improvement of engineering teams\u2019 production operations. \n\n\n\n * Develop and improve tools and automation to manage infrastructure and application configuration as code. \n\n\n\n * Enhance the quality, reliability, and stability of our infrastructure and operations.\n\n\n\n\nWhat We\u2019re Looking For\n\n * Bachelors and/or master\u0027s in computer science or related field of study \n\n\n\n * 10+ years\u0027 experience in software development or a related field \n\n\n\n * 5+ years\u0027 experience operating distributed applications 24x7x365, as part of a Cloud Engineering, DevOps, and/or SRE team. \n\n\n\n * 2+ years technical leadership experience\n\n\n\n * Extensive hands-on experience with designing, implementing and supporting infrastructure (AWS experience preferred) to support global-scale services \n\n\n\n * Deep hands-on experience with IaaS and PaaS solutions from AWS (or similar cloud provider): \n\n\n\n * Hands-on programming and scripting (Python, TypeScript, Bash, Go)\n\n\n\n * Hands-on experience with containers \u0026 container orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes \n\n\n\n * Strong communication skills with the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience\n\n\n\n\nSubsidiary:\n\nVenmo\n\nTravel Percent:\n\n0\n\n-\n\nThe base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring.
