Job Description - State Community Organizer

The SPLC is seeking a State Community Organizer for the Mississippi State Office who is passionate about Social Justice!  


The State Community Organizer builds and maintains relationships with community members, leaders, and partners. Identifies opportunities for community involvement and ways to support the Center's mission. They also engage allies in campaigns and advocacy efforts on a local and state level. This position will work from Mississippi 100% of the time and will cover the Northern Mississippi and Golden Triangle regions.

You produce excellent work products - from campaign materials and event plans to policy briefs and community toolkits - and you hold yourself to a high standard of quality in everything you deliver. You are skilled at managing competing deadlines and can effectively prioritize across organizing, advocacy, and administrative responsibilities without losing attention to detail.


Campaign-driven & Grassroots-rooted. You are comfortable with regular travel across the state to engage community members, partner organizations, and activists where they are. You bring strong project management instincts - knowing how to scope a plan, coordinate stakeholders, track deliverables, and execute on time. Whether you're recruiting and managing volunteers, facilitating a community training, or coordinating a statewide mobilization effort, you approach the work with purpose, accountability, and a deep commitment to advancing justice in Mississippi.

What You'll Do


Plan and organize projects and events, lead outreach and campaign activities, volunteer activities, mobilization efforts, and advocacy campaigns at local and state levels.


Promote community engagement, collaborate with ally organizations and activists, and work to build the power of community members and to support their priorities.


Plan for future work by SPLC and in collaboration with other partners.


Compile progress reports and community updates to stakeholders.


Perform research and develop tools and educational materials.


Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of community organizing and 1 year working on campaigns and/or advocacy efforts; and

  • High school diploma or GED.


Compensation & Benefits


This is a non-exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $55,825 ($26.84 per hour) annually. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Where & How You'll Work 


This role has the following work designation options:



  • Local Remote: Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.

  • Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

  • This position will report to the Manager, Community Organizer.


Other Special Considerations 


This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.


This position is represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
