An established engineering and design-build organization is seeking an experienced Structural Engineering Department Manager to lead complex industrial projects and guide a team of structural professionals. This is not a civil engineering role. Only candidates with industrial structural engineering experience will be considered.
Position Overview: Structural Engineering Department Manager
The Structural Engineering Department Manager serves as both a technical leader and people manager. This role functions as the senior structural engineer on multidisciplinary industrial projects while overseeing departmental operations, staff development, and quality control.
The position plays a highly visible role within the organization, supporting operational performance, mentoring engineering staff, and ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality structural solutions for industrial clients.
The organizations work focuses exclusively on industrial facilities, including manufacturing, chemical, petrochemical, polymer, and process-based environments. Residential, commercial, and retail structural engineering are not performed.
This is a hybrid role requiring regular in-office presence (minimum three days per week). Fully remote arrangements are not available.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, schedule, and allocate structural engineering resources to support project execution
Lead, mentor, train, and evaluate structural engineering staff
Support hiring, onboarding, and long-term department development
Establish and maintain department standards, procedures, and workflows
Serve as Lead Structural Engineer on multidisciplinary industrial projects
Review and approve structural designs, calculations, models, and drawings
Provide expert structural design for steel, concrete, masonry, and foundations
Resolve complex engineering, constructability, and field-related challenges
Review contractor bids and prepare bid evaluations
Perform site visits, field measurements, and construction support activities
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, internal standards, and client requirements
Collaborate with internal disciplines, clients, contractors, and external partners
Promote safe work practices and maintain a strong safety-focused mindset
Qualifications
Required
Bachelors degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license with authority to seal documents
Minimum 10 years of consulting experience or 15+ years in structural department roles
