Job Summary: The Structural Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, assembling, and positioning structural steel components in accordance with drawings, specifications, and NCCER structural fitting standards. This position supports fabrication and erection activities while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity in industrial and construction environments.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and welding symbols.
Measure, lay out, fit, and assemble structural steel members including beams, columns, braces, plates, and frames.
Perform accurate layout using tapes, squares, levels, and other measuring instruments.
Prepare materials for welding and bolting by cutting, beveling, grinding, and cleaning edges.
Ensure proper alignment, fit-up, and dimensional accuracy prior to welding or installation.
Assist welders with tack welding and final assembly as required.
Inspect fitted components to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
Safely operate hand tools, power tools, torches, and material handling equipment.
Follow CSFCO safety policies, OSHA regulations, and jobsite safety requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, welders, and other craft personnel.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of NCCER Structural Fitting principles and procedures.
Ability to interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and welding symbols.
Proficiency in measuring tools including tape measures, squares, levels, and calipers.
Understanding of structural steel materials, fasteners, and fabrication techniques.
Ability to perform accurate layout and fit-up within specified tolerances.
Familiarity with cutting, grinding, and edge preparation methods.
Basic knowledge of rigging, hoisting, and material handling safety.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Must be able to read and communicate in English to understand technical documents, safety procedures, and instructions relevant to job duties. English proficiency is required due to operational and safety communication needs.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Completion of NCCER Structural Fitting training or equivalent experience preferred.
Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in structural fitting, steel fabrication, or related construction work.
Industrial or heavy construction experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
Prolonged periods of standing and working in confined or elevated areas.
Exposure to heat, noise, and hazardous materials.
Must wear proper PPE at all times including hood, gloves, and protective clothing.
