About the Role

As a Structural Fitter, you will interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to lay out, position, and secure metal plates, frames, bulkheads, and other components. Working alongside welders, riggers, and fellow fitters, you will help transform raw material into fully formed ship structures. This hands-on position suits someone who enjoys solving fit-up challenges and seeing a project progress from parts to a finished assembly.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings to determine proper layout and fit of structural components.
• Measure, mark, and position steel plates, beams, bulkheads, and frames for assembly.
• Fit and align parts using clamps, jacks, wedges, and other rigging tools before tacking or welding.
• Verify dimensions, angles, and clearances to ensure assemblies meet specifications and tolerances.
• Use grinders, cutting torches, and hand and power tools to prepare and shape material.
• Collaborate with welders to secure components and support the work of a Structural Fitter crew across multiple construction stages.
• Inspect completed fit-ups for accuracy and report any discrepancies to supervisors.
• Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Structural Fitter or in a related metal fabrication trade.

• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work within tight tolerances.
• Capacity to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks in a shipyard environment.
