Starting hourly rate is $28.30 per hour. Prior confirmed State of Colorado state service in the Structural Trades Class Series may entitle candidates to a higher hourly wage.
Physical Plant Services (PPS) supports the educational and public service programs of Fort Lewis College through the delivery of effective operational support, maintenance services and the management of the College’s facilities construction program The services are coordinated through the Service Center and are accomplished by Custodial Services, Electrical Systems and Electronic Equipment Maintenance, Grounds and Equipment Maintenance, Mechanical Systems Maintenance and Structural Maintenance work units. The Project, Design and Construction work unit plans projects and provides design and construction management services to support the facilities improvement and construction program.
The Structural Maintenance work unit exists to maintain, repair and improve College facilities; provide support for college events; and activities; provide a safe and functional campus. Individual Structural Trades work unit staff members are skilled in the carpentry, general maintenance, roofing, painting, and locksmithing areas. The primary goal of the Structural Maintenance work unit is to provide services and facilities that create the best possible environment for teaching and learning at Fort Lewis College.
Job Description:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience Only:
Six (6) years of relevant experience in structural trades related to the work assigned to this position
OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in structural trades related to the work assigned equal to six (6) years.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Work experience in a higher education institution
- Work experience with an online work order system
- Supervisory experience
- Department budget experience including procurement card experience

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- This is an essential services position and must be able to work during inclement weather, special events, and emergencies. If the campus is closed due to inclement weather, this position must be able to get to work on time to assist with weather emergencies.

JOB DUTIES
Supervision 45%
- Supervise the ongoing operations of the staff assigned to the Structural Maintenance work unit.
- Evaluate needs, establish objectives, set priorities, assign and direct the efforts of assigned personnel in response to requests from other College work units.
- Evaluate the performance of the assigned staff in their duties in accordance with the requirements of the College and the State of Colorado.
- Approve timesheets as well as leave requests.
- Develop and maintain an ongoing work related and safety-training program for employees which includes the use of PPE (personal protection equipment).
- Interview and hire new employees following state and college policies and procedures.
- Resolve personnel issues. Administer personnel actions through the Appointing Authority following State of Colorado Department of Personnel Administration rules in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources.
- Maximize the utilization of the Work Order system for the assignment of tasks and processing of costs.
- This is an essential services position and is subject to call out in response to emergencies and inclement weather and accepts primary responsibilities for after-hour emergencies.
Construction Projects 10%
- Plan and accomplish general construction and renovation projects utilizing structural trades, other PPS staff, and/or contracted labor.
- Work includes construction of framed wall structures consisting of wood and/or metal framing and sheetrock and/or paneling; installing metal and bituminous roofing materials; installing suspended ceilings; hanging doors; installing windows; installing hardware including locks, hinges and door closures; building cabinets and fabricating counter tops. Work also includes concrete construction; the installation and repair of ceramic and quarry tile carpet and vct tile and wood flooring; glazing and metal work requiring welding and brazing.
- Work includes reading and interpreting construction documents and layout of work. Often requires modification of the design to accommodate as-found conditions.
- Work with campus Planning, Design & Construction department to ensure construction and maintenance work on campus complies with campus standards and codes. Helps review plans, specifications, and submittals for new campus construction or remodels as needed. Inspects new construction, attends meetings as required and provides input to project managers.
College Building Maintenance 25%
- Identify and initiate the development of College funded projects required to maintain and improve the condition of College facilities.
- Establish the project scope of the work, preparing a cost estimate and preparing documentation required to justify the work.
- Coordinates work orders and special events to best meet the needs of the campus on a consistent basis.
- Maintain an ongoing roof maintenance program.
Budget 5%
- Direct and manage the budget for the Structural Maintenance work unit.
- Manage expenditures to preserve the intent of the approved work units and project budgets.
- Review and authorize charges for services provided to other College departments through PPS work order system.
- Purchase required materials. Develop and implement plans for purchasing tools and safety equipment.
- Monitor, review, and approve charges to department budget from other departments and p-card purchases.
Training & Professional Development 5%
- Review and comprehend relevant employee handbooks and policies along with completing required training, including workplace safety, compliance, emergency procedures, and job-specific skills.
- Active participation in meetings, collaboration with colleagues, and professional development aligned with institutional goals are expected.
Snow Removal 5%
- Direct snow removal operations for the building roofs.
- Develop ongoing program for monitoring snow loads, accessing and working on college roofs, and proper snow removal methods.
- Operation of snow removal equipment such as snow blowers and shovels.
- Operation of light duty equipment with plows on a regular basis during snow season.
Campus Support 5%
- Support campus operations and events as requested. Event support for institutional and departments events including commencement.
- Other Duties as assigned.
