Student Worker-Teacher Resident

JOB SUMMARY

The Teacher Resident is a student teacher who participates in a year-long student experience under the guidance of a highly effective Mentor Teacher. A resident observes and learns on the job in preparation for a teaching career while earning a degree.  For a full school year, full-time, the resident works closely with the Mentor Teacher. Teacher Residents are actively engaged in as many elements of the classroom as possible from the very beginning of the residency year.  The Teacher Resident will assume greater responsibilities throughout the residency year.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Identify and address individual student’s social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs and barriers.
2. Hold students accountable for ambitious, measurable, high expectations of behavior and engagement.
3. Contribute to a culture of respect, enthusiasm, and rapport.
4. Manage student behavior during transitions and less structured time (such as recess, lunch).
5. Monitor independent work time in classroom while teacher provides instruction.
6. Co-Plan with Mentor Teacher and team.
7. Ensure a high-standards, differentiation-ready curriculum.
8. Plan backward to align all lessons, activities, and assessments with high-expectation standards & curriculum.
9. Implement and suggest improvements to instruction that develop higher-order thinking skills and is personalized, reflecting the levels and interests of individual students.
10. Implement and suggest improvements to assessments that accurately assess student progress.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

11. Provide small-group instruction under the direction and using tools/rubrics of the Mentor Teacher and team.

12. Supervise student skills practice, projects, and digital learning

13. Co-Teach with Mentor Teacher

14. Lead whole-group instruction

15. Participate in instructional planning, data review, and improvement occasionally during the year.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured, and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

No budget development activity is required.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Basic communication - very little communication required such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor, and co-workers in own department.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.
Ability to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.
