This position is responsible for the oversight of studio upkeep and daily operations, including making recommendations for equipment purchases and facilities repairs. The Studio Coordinator provides students and faculty with quality experiences and productive teaching environments. This role can expect a consistently heavier workload during Art School semester breaks when there is a focus on studio projects and cleaning.
The Art School is located on the fourteen-acre Lake Austin site of historic Laguna Gloria, a natural setting conducive to the creation of art. Our studios have direct access to the outdoors, and we encourage students to explore the grounds while working on class projects. Our goal is to foster creativity, enhance visual awareness, and improve technical skills in students' chosen medium.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Oversee the operations and maintenance of studios, including fabrication, painting, drawing, textile, and printmaking. This might include
Clean studio spaces, including mopping, sweeping, cleaning out sinks, and other basic cleaning duties
Provide basic tech support to teachers
Work closely with Ceramics Program Manager to give support as needed. This might include assisting with glaze mixing, kiln unloading, and Open Studio monitoring
Respond to instructor studio and maintenance requests, assists in creation of operational and safety policies, and take inventory and restocking of studio consumables (pencils, chalk, dry erase markers, masks, sponges, earplugs, etc.)
Ensure all tools and equipment are operating with the highest of functionality and safety, while making repairs and purchasing supplies as needed
Train instructors on safety and upkeep of studios
Work closely with the facilities department regarding necessary building repairs
Confidently find solutions to any issues that arise daily while continuing to work towards streamlining all studio operations
Work with accounting department submitting forms and balancing of statements for payment of purchases, vendor and Art School specific contractor invoices
Required Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of materials, techniques, and equipment used in art education
Strong listening and organization skills
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students
Ability to prioritize, problem-solve, and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment
Experience with basic computer and IT troubleshooting experience
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustration and Photoshop, Outlook, PC and Mac
Preferred: Experience with use and maintenance of fabrication equipment, including welders, band saws, chop saws, grinders and other tools
Preferred: Knowledge of EHS (environmental health and safety regulations) and best practices common in art production, especially pertaining to the safe use, handling, and management of a diversity of chemicals and equipment with varying levels of hazard
Education and Experience:
High school diploma ; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred in relation to art disciplines
2-5 years of related professional work experience
Experience with use and maintenance of drawing, painting, ceramics, and printmaking studios and equipment
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift heavy materials and equipment up to 50 pounds
Ability to stand and walk around studio spaces for extended amount of time
