SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Technician - Utility Locating Technician

Location: Sunset Hills, Missouri or Belleville, Illinois

BFW is seeking a highly motivated Utility Locating Technician to join our dynamic team. This role involves identifying, evaluating, and managing subsurface utilities for various design and construction projects. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers, and field crews to ensure accurate utility data collection, analysis, and mapping.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed field investigations using state-of-the-art equipment


• Review project specifications, plans, and permits


• Coordinate and communicate with utility owners, stakeholders, subconsultants, and contractors


• Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices


• Assist with geophysical exploration data collection (e.g., GPR, seismic refraction, EM, electrical resistivity)


• Perform Utility Locating using EM Line Locator and GPR

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Geology, or related field preferred but not required


• Working knowledge of utility design, construction, and maintenance standards


• Willingness to travel for project assignments (approximately 25%)

Physical Demands:

• The job will be performed both in the office and outdoors in various weather conditions. In-office requirements will include the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.  The fieldwork will require that an individual be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment on occasion.


• Position requires that the individual be able to lift and carry weighted materials (up to approximately 70 pounds) and maneuver large, cumbersome equipment.


• Will require the ability to stand, walk, and sit, talk and hear, both in person and by telephone, use hands to handle objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms.


• This position will regularly require stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching.
