Job Description - Summer Camp Counselor

Description

Position Summary

Directly supports people we support during summer camp sessions to create opportunities to achieve their personal outcomes in the areas of identity, autonomy, attainment of services and goals, safety, rights, and health and wellness. The Summer Camp Counselor plays a vital role in creating a safe, fun, and memorable summer camp experience for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

  • Offer and provide individualized support and care to campers, addressing their specific needs and preferences.
  • Provide attentive supervision and guidance to campers through the camp day and night, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Lead and participate in a range of recreational activities, including games, arts and crafts, sports, and nature exploration.
  • Implement positive behavior support strategies, promoting social interaction, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Assist in the delivery of camp programs and educational initiatives in alignment with camp goals and themes.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow camp counselors and employees to coordinate and execute daily activities.
  • Serve as a positive role model, exemplifying teamwork, respect, responsibility, and enthusiasm.
  • Maintain open and constructive communication with campers, peers, and camp management, addressing concerns and providing updates as needed.
  • Complete timely, accurate, detailed, and relevant records for support provided that address each individual’s personal outcomes.
  • Assist campers with daily living tasks, including meal preparation and personal hygiene.
  • Utilize adaptive equipment as necessary when providing support to people we support.
  • Assist with cleaning the environment to ensure it is well-kept, safe, and organized.
  • Implement natural programming including age-appropriate activities that are designed to foster the acquisition of skills, building positive social behavior, interpersonal competence, greater independence, and personal choice. Monitor, document, and adhere to the nutritional/dietary needs of each person we support.
  • Respond to medical and safety incidents, administer first aid when necessary, and ensure campers safety.
  • Communicate with the assigned supervisor and/or agency nurse immediately when any unusual medical or behavioral incidents occur during the care of the person we support.
  • Adhere to all applicable paperwork deadlines, ensuring that all assigned paperwork is completed accurately and completely.
  • Ensure that all people we support are free from abuse and neglect and immediately report the suspicion of abuse and neglect to the assigned supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and professional training as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED

Required Skills/Abilities & Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and function well in a high-paced (at times stressful) environment.
  • Acceptable background checks

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand, walk, and sit eight (8) hours at a time.
  • Repetitive bending and reaching up to four (4) hours a day.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist.
