Summer Camp Counselor (SCC) (Seasonal Full-time, 40 hours) Non-exempt

BUILD, Inc. (Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development) is presently seeking a committed, self-motivated, and innovative individual to join our team. BUILD is a nationally respected gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organization based on Chicago’s West Side. Since 1969, BUILD has worked to save lives and mentor young people who live in the city’s most challenged neighborhoods. Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development (BUILD, Inc) is seeking a committed, self-motivated, enthusiastic professional to join its wonderful team in the seasonal role of Summer Camp Counselor (SCC). The (SCC) is responsible for providing high quality recreational, educational, and cultural experiences for youths. The (SCC) will also be responsible for the general safety and development of youths. The (SCC) will be assigned to one of our five summer camp locations and report to the Site Coordinator (SC).

 Responsibilities are but not limited to:

  • Assist with planning, preparing, and facilitating activities with youths.
  • Assist with ordering instructional materials that facilitate active learning
  • Use group management skills to actively engage all youth in daily activities
  • Manage youth behavior by establishing guidelines, expectations, mutual respect, and mutual accountability
  • Attend departmental and agency-wide staff meetings, as scheduled and agency-wide events, as required
  • Maintain current knowledge in the field, including but not limited  to, participation in workshops to enhance their skills
  • Maintain current knowledge of agency’s theories, methodologies, and best practices

Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma required
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with youth
  • Ability to plan, implement and document activity plans
  • Familiarity with principles and practices of after school development, social-emotional learning, restorative justice, and trauma      informed approaches to youth development preferred, but not required
  • Highly organized with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Maintain respectful and appropriate relationships with program participants, agency staff and the various public agencies, demonstrating sensitivity to all ethnic, racial, social, and economic backgrounds
  • Automobile preferred, but not required, with insurance and a valid driver’s license
  • Proficient with technology systems, with the ability to integrate technology into daily program operations and evaluation systems
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Multiple positions available: Locations vary: Austin, Humboldt Park and Garfield Park.

Salary Description

$22.38 - $23.08/hourly
