Job Description - Summer Carpenter

Description

City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh’s leading professional theater dedicated to new plays, seeks to hire two SUMMER CARPENTERS. These full-time, temporary positions will supplement a three-person scenic team. The position is full-time from May 12th to July 28th. Start date is somewhat flexible. 

Most work will be completed at City Theatre’s Chosky Production Center, but there will be two mandatory out-of-town load-ins and changeovers for Chautauqua Theatre Company in Chautauqua, New York (2.5 hours from Pittsburgh.) 

  • Friday, June 20– Sunday, June 22 
  • Thursday, July 25 – Monday, July 28 

Chautauqua Theatre Company will reimburse transportation costs and provide overnight accommodations and per diem. Staff working weekends for load-in and changeovers will be scheduled for time off during the week.  

Paid days off will include Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day. 

Requirements

Principle responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Carpentry: constructing scenery as directed by the Technical Director; assisting with the packing, load-in, and strike, of scenery; scene shop cleaning and upkeep as needed

  • Strong carpentry skills 
  • An enthusiasm for problem-solving and collaboration 
  • The ability to self-motivate and work independently when needed

Requirements of position:  

  • With the exception of workdays onsite in Chautauqua, most work weeks will adhere to a Monday-Friday 40-hour standard.  
  • Comfort working in lifts and on ladders at heights up to 16’ 
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds 
  • Be fully vaccinated from Covid-19 and current with all CDC-recommended and eligible boosters. 

Reporting & Compensation: 

The position reports directly to the Technical Director and Production Manager. It is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary position, that pays $18/hour and is eligible for overtime at time and a half.
