Job Summary: Reporting directly to the Coding Consultant Manager, this is a working supervisor who will be assigned coding consultant duties along with providing leadership and supervision to coding consultants. Responsible for day-to-day operations of coding consultant staff, ensuring departmental goals and standards are met. Holds coding consultant staff accountable for meeting department and individual performance goals. Coaches staff for performance and development. Participates in creating processes, standard work and accompanying policies and procedures related to documentation, coding quality and provider education. Presents complex coding issues to various audiences throughout KFHPW. Serves as a primary resource for documentation and coding. Participates in improvement workshops and serves on committees or work groups as a documentation and coding subject matter expert. Collaborates with other leaders on the implementation of new coding initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities:
Accountable for supervising a team of coding consultants whose responsibilities include: conducting provider documentation and coding reviews and audits, applying corrective action plans, education and feedback to other clinical staff. The coding supervisor is accountable for performance management including development, providing constructive feedback and coaching, and progressive discipline when necessary. Supervisor duties also include the following three components:
Organizing workflows and ensuring that the coding consultant staff understand their duties or delegated tasks. Participates in hiring new employees, training, addresses complaints, manages conflict, and problem-solves. Effectively manage capacity and demand utilizing lean methodologies.
Initiates and maintains productive and professional partnerships with all colleagues at all Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington locations and contracted facilities to ensure the quality of documentation and coding meet industry standards.
Lead, execute and monitor multiple and various projects and operational policies that lead to continuous improvement, ongoing efficiencies and excellent service to Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washingtons internal and external customers.
Serve as the primary coding consultant for one or more specialty and primary care teams. Performs medical record documentation reviews of patient care against services and diagnoses reported by providers following the KFHPW Coding and Billing Quality Plan. Identifies coding errors and process issues, provides feedback. Provides on-site coding support and develops processes to assist providers in maximizing Epic efficiencies while maintaining correct coding and compliance.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding in a clinic setting, including chart auditing experience.
Minimum five (5) years of experience in advanced coding, auditing and provider education.
Education
Bachelor's degree in health care field or education-related major OR a minimum four (4) years of directly related experience. High School Diploma OR General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
Professional Coder Certificate required at hire OR Certified Coding Specialist required at hire OR Registered Health Information Technician Certificate required at hire OR Coding Specialist Certificate - Physician Based required at hire OR Professional Coder Certificate - Hospital required at hire OR Registered Health Information Administrator Certificate required at hire OR Outpatient Coder Certificate required at hire.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to establish goals, lead and motivate individuals and teams to achieve stated goals and measure results.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and monitor progress of projects.
Experience in application of compliant coding principles, including Medicare compliance issues.
Extensive knowledge of healthcare billing and reimbursement including industry standard billing rules, Medicare, Medicaid, L&I, and commercial insurance.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
In-depth knowledge of ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding and documentation.
Ability to make independent decisions and solve problems.
Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
Proven ability to mentor others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) years progressive supervisory or management experience.
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Technology or other business or healthcare related field.
