Job Description - Supervisor, Library - Cataloging (Hybrid)

Hiring range: $64,480.00 to $77,355.20 ($31.00 to $37.19 per hour). Starting rate will depend on experience, education, and qualifications. Advancement opportunities exist for individuals motivated to move up within Anoka County.

Position Description

Join the Anoka County Library Team! Are you passionate about organizing information and making resources accessible to the community? Anoka County Library is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative leader to oversee our cataloging operations. In this role, you’ll ensure that the Anoka County Library collection—spanning print, digital, and multimedia materials—is accurately cataloged and easy for patrons to discover. You’ll lead a dedicated staff, maintain high standards for metadata and classification, and help shape the way our library connects people to knowledge. The Library Supervisor, with a focus of cataloging, plays a key role in overseeing cataloging operations within the library department. This position ensures that materials are cataloged in a timely manner and establishes and implements procedures to enhance team efficiency and productivity. They provide expertise to ensure that bibliographic control activities result in maximum retrieval with minimum user effort.

Pay & Benefits

  • Salary: $64,480 to $77,355.20 ($31.00 to $37.19 per hour).

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 32: $64,480 to $90,230.40 ($31.00 to $43.38 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at Library Support Services located at 707 County Hwy 10 NE, Blaine, MN 55434.

  • Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Supervisor, Library.

  • Create a welcoming environment for all by providing excellent customer service.

  • Hire, evaluate, train, develop, and provide work direction for employees and volunteers.

  • Supervise cataloging to ensure movement of materials is responsive to community needs. Responsible for catalog search training across all Anoka County Library locations.

  • Organize and maintain Anoka County’s collection and catalog of print, non-print, and digital materials.

  • Empower and connect patrons to appropriate resources.  

  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging.

  • Ensures accuracy of the bibliographic database, including authority control.

  • Determine metrics to collect and review to improve operations.

  • Troubleshoot computer software and hardware issues. Identify and resolve issues following standard protocols.

  • Maintain current knowledge of county and library policies and procedures. Interpret and communicate policies to patrons and employees as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of job-related experience

  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed     

  • Previous supervisory experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Master’s degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited institution

  • Degree in Library Science or related field

  • Experience performing complex copy and original cataloging using MARC and RDA standards

  • Experience maintaining authority records

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, warehouse, or public library depending on assignment

  • Frequent distraction and multitasking

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.

  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds

  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing to assist patrons

  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, frequent wrist and finger manipulation to complete computer work, and occasionally pushing carts weighing over 300 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting of 20-50 lbs. while moving materials

  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment

  • Occasional travel to other county work sites as needed

  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle

  • Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, and sometimes hostile clients

  • May be required to use kick stools to reach items from high shelves
