UPMC Pathology department

is looking to add a

Supervisor Pathologists' Assistant

to join our leadership team!

The Supervisor will be based out of both the UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside hospital labs and will work daylight hours with no weekends or holidays.

We are a high-volume, fast-paced pathology lab that exists in a busy, urban hospital setting but still maintains a community hospital feel. The pathology team works close together to deliver excellent patient care, while also providing career development and teaching opportunities. The Supervisor role will provide a mix of people managing and both on and off-bench tasks.

Responsibilities:

Develop tissue handling protocols and procedures for research studies in conjunction with research investigators.

Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of pathophysiology for case types seen at the UPMCHS. Direct others in specimen triage, description, orientation and sectioning.

Orient, train, develop and supervise Resident Pathologists, pathologist Assistants, Autopsy Technicians, Laboratory Assistants and Tissue Transporters. Prepare non-physician schedules, job duty assignments and evaluations.

Responsible for Anatomic Pathology Lab Information System software update, physician training and procedural issues.

Perform inventory, ordering, maintenance and storage of supplies and equipment in the department.

Oversee the operation and development of the Laboratory Information System as related to Gross Pathology, Operating Room Consultation and Autopsy Pathology.

Perform quality assurance monitoring and follow-up gross in surgical and autopsy pathology.

Review procedure manuals and develops new procedures and policies.

Develop and documents recommendations for capital and operating budget and submits to the Administrative Director of Pathology.

Serve as the primary trainer of Resident Pathologists, Fellows and Medical Students in gross surgical and autopsy pathology of adolescent, audit and geriatric patients as well as the Laboratory Information and Medical Archival Systems (MARS).

Communicate with clinicians regarding specimen procurement, delivery and orientation, including interoperative specimen orientation. Assume responsibility for the front end of Pathology Services insuring optimal care is provided.

Supervise the operation of the Surgical Pathology Gross Room, Frozen Section Rooms, and the Autopsy Suites.

Perform employee performance appraisals.

Perform duties according to the Basics of Service Excellence when interacting with visitors, patients, hospital personnel, medical staff and coworkers.

Act as the department of Pathology safety and regulatory agent in keeping up to date with new standards and oversees safety training for Anatomic Pathology.

Monitor operating costs and expenditures, productivity levels and procedure volumes for his/her cost center, with monthly variance reports to the Administrative Director of Pathology.

Interview, screen and recommend to the Administrative Director of Pathology candidates for job vacancies.

Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited, Master's degree pathologists' assistant training program or Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology or a related field and successful completion of an AAPA-approved program is required.

Knowledge of specimens, autopsy procedures and general methodology normally gained through at least 5 years of experience as a Pathologists Assistant.

Supervisor/management

experience of 6 months is preferred.

Knowledge of OSHA safety and chemical regulations is required as well as laboratory computer services.

Analytical and organizational ability necessary to identify technical resources and provide effective administrative and personnel management in assigned area.

Interpersonal ability necessary to deal effectively with all levels of hospital staff and physicians and to supervise assigned personnel. Oral and written skills sufficient to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Computer aptitude necessary to effectively utilize laboratory computer systems.

All procedures or job related tasks involve inherent potential for mucous membrane or spills contact with blood, body fluids or tissues. A potential for spills or splashes of biohazard substances does exist. Exposure to normal laboratory lights and noises and occasional exposure to toxic and carcinogenic chemicals.
