Job Description - Supervisor, Student Assistance Program

Description

Position Summary:

 The Supervisor of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) provides direct programmatic and clinical supervision to Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) in assigned schools. This role ensures consistent delivery of evidence-based screening and assessment, referral, prevention education, and short-term intervention services, while aligning staff performance with organizational goals, grant requirements, and school district needs. The Supervisor supports professional development, monitors program fidelity, and acts as a key liaison in building partnerships with schools and school leadership. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (included but are not limited to): 

  • Provide programmatic and clinical supervision to SACs, ensuring quality and fidelity in screening and assessment, referral, and universal prevention activities. 
  • Coach, evaluate, and monitor SAC performance through structured supervision, data reviews, and feedback from schools and districts 
  • Support SACs with clinical consultation, crisis intervention, and case consultation as needed.  
  • Guide SACs in the use of data systems and ensure accurate, timely reporting to meet internal and external requirements. 
  • Conduct interviews, onboarding, and training for newly hired SACs; provide mentoring and feedback during probationary and transitional periods. 
  • Utilize the payroll management system to manage and approve timecards and approve paid time off as appropriate.  
  • Facilitate onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development for prevention staff. 
  • Administer the union contract and play a critical intermediary role to ensure the CBA and policies and procedures are implemented fairly across the organization.  
  • Publish, communicate, and reinforce program expectations and program rules.  
  • Promote a culture of learning, collaboration, and accountability 
  • Conducts performance evaluations and supports the implementation of goal setting and performance improvement plans. 
  • Monitor program compliance and implementation at assigned schools through site visits, data system reviews, data dashboards, and administrator feedback. 
  • Serve as the organization’s primary point of contact for school principals or designees within assigned schools.  
  • Support the SAC to provide orientation and awareness presentations to school staff and leadership on SAP roles and processes. 
  • Assist in evaluating the impact of SAP services using qualitative and quantitative data and help develop action plans for improvement. 
  • Support and deliver training that aligns with SAC certification and meets union and program expectations. 
  • Attend and contribute to management team meetings, strategic planning sessions, and program retreats. 
  • Represent RISAS at local and statewide committees, coalitions, and partner meetings as assigned. 

Other Duties: 

  • Assist in piloting or testing new tools, curricula, and procedures. 
  • Provide short-term coverage  
  • On-site availability to support SAP as needed in assigned school districts 
  • Perform other duties consistent with the role, as assigned by leadership 

Requirements

 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Master's degree and licensure eligibility (e.g. LMHC, LMFT, LCDP, or LICSW) in behavioral health field. 
  • Minimum 7 years' experience providing behavioral health or prevention services, primarily school-based, including diverse youth populations. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in adolescent substance use and mental health. 
  • Experience providing supervision and managing performance. 
  • Proficiency in motivational interviewing and evidence-based prevention frameworks. 
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, and experience in public speaking. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn data systems. 
  • Ability to meet the expectations for background checks required by school systems. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience supervising unionized staff. 
  • Familiarity with state systems and school-based mental health supports in Rhode Island. 
  • Bilingual, Spanish preferred.  

Work Environment / Physical Demands: 

  • Must use telephone and computer to support division functions. 
  • Must be able to visit schools and other sites around the state. 
  • Must be able to move 20 lbs of promotional materials, projectors, etc. to school and community events. 

Hours & Attendance Requirements: 

  • 37.5-hour workweek, 12 months a year, with flexibility to present at or attend school and community events in the evening or on weekends as needed.
