At Murphy Oil Corporation, we believe the rich experiences and backgrounds of our employees strengthen our Company, create a productive workforce, and drive our success. We encourage you to apply for the positions for which you meet the qualifications.

Job Summary

The Subsurface Data Management Supervisor is a hands‑on leader who supports upstream exploration and development activities by overseeing the day‑to‑day execution of subsurface data management work. This role is well‑suited for a self‑starter who performs effectively in a fast‑paced E&P environment and can balance multiple operational priorities while maintaining high data quality standards.

The supervisor is responsible for providing direct oversight, guidance, and workload coordination for the subsurface data management team. The role ensures that subsurface datasets—such as seismic, well, interpretation, and related technical data—are properly received, organized, cataloged, quality‑controlled, documented, and archived in support of Geoscience project workflows. Acting as a strong advocate for established data management best practices, the supervisor applies working knowledge of subsurface data governance, standards, retention, and compliance requirements. This position partners closely with Geoscience teams, IT, business stakeholders, and external vendors to ensure timely data delivery, accurate metadata capture, and consistent application of data standards across assets.

The Subsurface Data Management Supervisor may also monitor subsurface data storage usage and capacity, proactively identify potential constraints and coordinate actions to prevent storage or performance issues. The role supports data security and regulatory compliance requirements by ensuring proper access controls, documentation, and audit readiness are maintained.

This position focuses on execution, team supervision, and operational continuity, while escalating risks, resourcing needs, and improvement opportunities to management as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day supervision, task coordination, and technical guidance for the subsurface data management team supporting Exploration and Subsurface Development activities.

  • Support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of subsurface data management processes and systems in collaboration with Geoscience, IT, and business stakeholders.

  • Advise on project prioritization, workload sequencing, and annual objectives for subsurface data management initiatives, escalating risks and resourcing needs to management as appropriate.

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of industry best practices for subsurface data types, including seismic, well, petrophysical, interpretation, and application specific datasets

  • Ensure consistent adherence to Murphy data management workflows and standards, including naming conventions, storage structures, formatting guidelines, and request tracking processes.

  • Advise on data governance practices related to the organization, standardization, and structure of project and storage environments, including maintaining and updating the technical documentation repository.

  • Oversee data receipt, quality control, metadata capture, documentation, archival, and access controls to ensure subsurface data is reliable, discoverable, and fit for purpose.

  • Interface with vendors to resolve data delivery, quality, or technical issues, ensuring alignment with technical requirements and business needs.

  • Monitor subsurface data storage usage and capacity trends, proactively identifying potential constraints and coordinating mitigation actions to support uninterrupted geoscience operations.

  • Effectively manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects in a fast‑paced E&P environment, ensuring deadlines, quality expectations, and operational commitments are met.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience or related degree

  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in oil and gas

  • Excellent understanding of E&P data types and familiar with subsurface technical data management principles and practices through the data lifecycle

  • Experience with implementing Petrel Studio, OSDU, and/or global well master systems

  • Proficiency in project management of the following software: Paleoscan, HampsonRussell, Kingdom, Petrel, ArcGIS, DUG, Geolog

The individual is required to take all applicable safety precautions.  Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.  The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
