Job Description - Support Services Technician

Fenner Dunlop is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Support Services Technician to join our Diagnostics and Support Services team in Bluefield, VA! Reporting to the Director of Diagnostics and Support Services, you will play an important role in supporting production and customer service operations by preparing splice materials and kits, managing inventory, coordinating shipments, and setting up production orders. You will also assist with hazardous material shipments, RFID tags, inductive loops, and other materials while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with company standards. Working collaboratively with Production, Supply Chain Management, Warehouse/Shipping, and other internal teams, this position offers an opportunity to contribute to efficient day-to-day operations while developing valuable manufacturing and materials management skills.

What You’ll Do


Splice Materials & Product Preparation
• Prepare bulk splice materials and splice kits for both fabric and steel cord conveyor belting, ensuring materials are accurately selected, assembled, labeled, and packaged according to customer and production requirements.
• Prepare inductive loops for internal and external customers in accordance with established specifications and quality standards.
• Prepare and package RFID tags for internal and external customers, verifying accuracy and completeness prior to shipment or distribution.
• Review work orders and customer requirements to ensure the appropriate materials and components are available and prepared accurately.
• Inspect completed materials and kits for accuracy, completeness, and quality prior to shipment or transfer to the appropriate department.


Shipping & Hazardous Materials
• Package and prepare customer orders for shipment, ensuring materials are properly secured, labeled, documented, and prepared in accordance with company procedures.
• Prepare and process shipments containing hazardous materials in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
• Ensure required hazardous material labeling, packaging, documentation, and handling procedures are followed.
• Coordinate with shipping and other appropriate personnel to ensure orders are prepared and released accurately and on schedule.


Inventory & Materials Management
• Maintain accurate inventory levels of raw materials used in production and kit preparation.
• Monitor inventory levels, identify replenishment needs, and coordinate material requirements with Supply Chain Management (SCM).
• Maintain inventory of packaging materials and factory supplies, monitoring usage and coordinating replenishment with designated personnel.
• Communicate material shortages, inventory discrepancies, and anticipated requirements to the appropriate personnel to minimize operational disruptions.
• Maintain organized storage of raw materials, packaging supplies, and other materials in accordance with company procedures.


Production Planning & Order Management
• Set up jobs and date orders in the E9 Planning Workbench, ensuring production and customer orders are entered accurately and scheduled appropriately.
• Review production requirements and order information to support accurate job setup and timely completion of customer orders.
• Coordinate with production, SCM, and other internal departments to address scheduling, material availability, and order-related issues.
• Immediately communicate production issues, material shortages, equipment concerns, or other potential disruptions to the Supervisor to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
• Perform responsibilities with limited supervision while exercising sound judgment and maintaining established quality, safety, and production standards.


Safety, Quality & Compliance
• Work safely at all times and actively contribute to a strong safety culture by following established safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
• Promote a safe work environment by identifying and communicating unsafe conditions or behaviors and ensuring that coworkers, contractors, visitors, and other individuals in the work area follow applicable safety requirements.
• Use hand tools and other equipment properly and safely and maintain tools in good working condition.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including properly storing materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Follow all company policies and procedures related to safety, quality, environmental compliance, hazardous material handling, inventory control, and shipping.
• Perform work in accordance with established quality standards and procedures to ensure products and orders meet customer and company requirements.
• Promptly communicate safety concerns, quality issues, material discrepancies, or other operational concerns to management.


General Responsibilities
• Work collaboratively with Supply Chain Management, production, warehouse/shipping, and other internal departments to support efficient operations and timely customer service.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation related to materials, inventory, jobs, and shipments as required.
• Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and complete work accurately and efficiently with limited supervision.
• Support a positive and safety-focused work environment by demonstrating safe work practices and encouraging others to do the same.
• Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.


What You’ll Need


• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
• Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions, work orders, and safety procedures.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision and adapt to changing business and production needs.
• Strong communication skills and ability to promptly report production, quality, material, or safety concerns.
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn applicable company systems.
• Ability to regularly lift and move up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to routinely stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, reach, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability and willingness to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).


Working Conditions/Physical Demands 


• Ability to lift 75 pounds on a regular basis
• Ability to move 75 pounds on a regular basis
• Ability to work shifts, weekends, and/or holidays
• Frequent manual dexterity (e.g., grasping, pulling, etc.)
• Routinely stand, squat, and/or work in confined spaces
• Overnight travel <15%; valid driver's license required
• Exposure to hazards (e.g., mechanical, electrical, chemical, gases, etc.)
• Visual acuity (color, depth, field of vision)
• Work in varying atmospheric conditions (e.g., fumes, dusts, gases, etc.)
