Job Description - Surgery Nurse Manager

Description

The Surgery Nurse Manager will be under the supervision of the Administrator. The position will be located at Elko Community Health Center (ECHC) and will require flexibility in schedule/ hours based on facility needs. The position will also continue to provide direct patient care services at least 50% - 75% of the time on average.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing primary assistance to the Administrator, in overall administration of Patient Care Services/Nursing Services and in guiding the overall management of the practice of nursing and profession of nursing within Community Health Medical Management (CHMM) & ECHC.
  • Provides leadership and direct supervision to the nursing staff in the Operating Rooms, Procedure Rooms, Preop, PACU, and the Cath Lab. Assesses, plans, and evaluates the processes and daily operations of the assigned programs to include clinic and procedure flow, efficiency, utilization, and staffing.
  • Assists in recruiting and training nurses and other health care professionals, and maintenance of required facility and competency records.
  • Serves as an active member of a number of CHMM & ECHC committees and sub- committees such as, Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI), Patient Safety, Infection Prevention, Elko Operations, and takes an active role in various nursing led projects and initiatives.
  • Follows up on sentinel events and/or other adverse events, collaborating with the Patient Safety Manager, QAPI, and Peer Review Committees.
  • Reviews Access, National Surgery Office metrics, Performance Measures, Patient Satisfaction scores and other data for trends and early intervention for areas of direct supervision; formulates follow-up plans with the service and other services as necessary.
  • Reviews Arbor Patient Satisfaction data, patient outcomes, quality metrics, and other data for trends and early intervention; formulates follow-up plans with the Administrator, and frontline nursing staff across CHMM.
  • Establishes and maintains key relationships to assist nursing, technician, and support staff to carry out the functions and activities expected of them.
  • Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work, ensuring all patient care activities are covered.
  • Carefully monitors nursing resources, alerting the Administrator and CHMM leadership to gaps in coverage, upcoming changes in nursing resources, assists in budgeting for expected overtime, etc.
  • Identifying developmental and training needs of nursing team members, providing or making decisions for such development and training, assigning work to team members based on clinical priorities, the difficulty of the assignments, and the capabilities of the team members.
  •  Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters including disciplinary actions in conjunction with oversight from the Administrator.
  • Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious, unresolved, complaints to the Administrator, Medical Director, or CHMM leadership.
  • Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate
  • Additionally, the position is responsible for performance improvement, customer and patient satisfaction, patient, and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards to include preparation for AAAHC, State of Nevada, and other regulatory agencies, including the formulation and maintenance of action plans to correct deficiencies.
  • Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians, their office managers, and other clinicians.
  • Works collaboratively with the Administrator to assess provider utilization, and coordinate block scheduling times for existing and new surgeons.
  • Works collaboratively with the Administrator, Supply Manager, and other leadership in strategic equipment planning for surgery and surgery clinic.
  • Works collaboratively with the Business Office Manager to foster teamwork among the clinic staff and Business Office Specialists, addressing the timeliness of scheduling consults, communicating with patients, and ensuring all team members are providing the best care possible.
  • Collaborates closely with Anesthesia Services to ensure efficient delivery of patient care among departments.
  • Serves as acting Administrator, in times of the Administrator’s absence.
  • Routinely assists in leading staff huddles, meetings, and sending out various communication regarding updates, future developments, addressing and quickly responding to questions, concerns, and ideas for improvement shared from team members.
  • Required to occasionally work evenings and weekends to provide leadership support for Engineering power outages, water outages, infrastructure construction, and Disaster Management activities.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of full-time work experience in nursing is required.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and team leadership skills; including a demonstrated ability to handle difficult people and difficult situations.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize the workload.
  • Advanced problem solving and project/time management essential.
  • Advanced computer skills, ability to develop presentations to all levels using Microsoft Office applications, and extensive understanding of Electronic Medical Records systems.
  • Ability to work in a complex, rapidly evolving environment with multiple internal and external vendors, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices for Patient Safety, Infection Prevention, Quality Metrics, AAAHC and HIPPA requirements.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a culturally diverse environment.
