Job Description - Surgical Recovery Lead


South Texas Blood & Tissue is an AABB-accredited blood bank. It operates nine donor centers in South Texas, distributing blood, plasma, platelets, and other components to regional hospitals and emergency first responders. It also provides starting materials to therapeutic developers, and clinical research services. Its apheresis center received FACT accreditation in 2022 for peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection. As an AATB-accredited tissue bank, it offers tissue recovery from living and deceased donors.


 


Pay Rate: Hourly $25.50- $30.00/ Annually $53,040.00- $62,400.00

General Summary


Responsible to coordinate and lead the surgical recovery of authorized deceased tissue donors and maintain working relationships with hospital, funeral home, medical examiner, organ & eye bank, and customer personnel.


Will assist in other administrative, training, facility, equipment and supply management to support the tissue recovery program.


Will coordinate with surgical personnel to recover tissues in a timely manner, monitoring aseptic techniques, and ensure accurate documentation is completed; occasionally participate in surgical recovery procedures.

Provide world class customer service by capturing and being responsive to the voice of the customer (internal or external, including donors for select positions) through multiple feedback channels in order to resolve issues and drive satisfaction in accordance with the BBG customer engagement, feedback, and complaint processes.


It is essential that the incumbent have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old with a good driving record to meet organization driving standards.


 


Major Duties and Responsibilities


 


Essential Tasks


 


Act as point of escalation and lead staff in performing tissue recovery tasks for each assigned donor.


Evaluate potential donor information to determine acceptability for tissue recovery in accordance with written internal and customer criteria.


Evaluate and independently make a judgment decision regarding donor suitability based on physical examination and medical record review.


Oversee and coordinate donor cases with the surgical recovery teams, hospitals, medical examiners, funeral homes, eye banks, and others as applicable.


Perform thorough and accurate documentation of recovery procedures in addition to performing back table and/or surgical specialist duties while maintaining aseptic techniques.


Responsible for final disposition of recovered tissue and test samples to include storage and/or shipping to destination per applicable procedures.


Building and maintain relationships with local recovery facilities such as funeral homes, operating rooms, medical examiner’s offices, etc.


Maintaining an adequate inventory of all supplies and reagents associated with tissue recoveries.


Perform and/or assist with other the maintenance of department facilities and equipment.


Perform and/or assist with training other surgical recovery staff and administrative functions.


Maintain and demonstrate competence in assigned duties.


Performs other duties as assigned.


 


 


NonEssential Tasks

Education


Requires a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.


Prefer sixty (60) hours from an accredited college or university or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university.


 


Licenses and/or Certifications


Valid United States Driver’s License Certified Tissue Bank Specialist,or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), or Medical Technologist (MT)(ASCP), or Texas Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) preferred


 


Experience


Requires three or more years of operating room and/or aseptic technical procedures experience.


If Associate's Degree is attained, requires one or more years of experience.


Prefer a background in organ, tissue, and/or cornea recovery.


Prefer medical, anatomical, and physiological background/experience.


 


Knowledge


Must have a working knowledge of medical terminology and aseptic technique.


Must maintain knowledge of and perform according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.


 


Skills


Must be capable of operating motor vehicles in all types of weather conditions.


Must have strong computer skills.


Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.


Must have excellent analytical/critical thinking skills.


 


Abilities


Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.


Must be highly dependable and have the ability to make timely decisions.


Must be neat in appearance and well groomed.


Must be professional, detail oriented, selfmotivated, innovative, creative, assertive, organized, communicative, and have the ability to work independently.


Must possess the ability to understand and follow organizational SOPs and perform and evaluate tissue procedures.


Must work closely with senior management and internal departments to ensure contracts are in alignment with corporate initiatives.
