Lifeline of Ohio coordinates and promotes organ, eye, and tissue donation across Ohio, and we are seeking a Surgical Recovery Specialist (SRS) to join our Organ Recovery Team.
An SRS assists with transplantation and/or research through effective recovery, surgical instrumentation use via surgical/scrub tech role, mechanical preservation and perfusion of organs in compliance with regulating, accrediting, and governing agencies to maximize the graft survival of recovered organs for transplantation.
*This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits eligible position.It is a Night Shift model, consisting of a mix of 12hr and 14hr shifts.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Communicate with the Operating Room, visiting transplant center, organ procurement staff, donor hospital staff, family support staff and donor families to assure successful procurement and preservation of organs and tissues for transplant and research.

2. Coordinate the surgical recovery portion of the organ donation process for local organ recoveries.

  • Arrives onsite to the ICU and obtains handoff report prior to schedule recovery.
  • Ensures allocated organ packets and blood for tissue typing are collected and labeled according to UNOS/TransNet policy.
  • Transports the donor from the ICU to the OR for recovery.
  • Participates in the Pre-ABO verification and donor paperwork review with transplant surgical teams.
  • Delivers the moment of silence for the donor and participates in the hospital’s surgical time out prior to incision.
  • Maintains the Organ OR /Post recovery documentation in the donor electronic record
  • Notifies the Organ Recovery Coordinator when organ reallocation is required intraoperatively.
  • Labels and packages recovered organs and tissues according to established protocols
  • Provides post recovery morgue care of the donor with hospital required identification.
  • Communicates post recovery procedure details to coroner office representatives via established communication channels (documentation, phone calls, etc.).
  • Notifies hospital and OPO staff when donor recovery is complete and the donor is ready for transportation to a funeral home or coroner’s office.
  • Finalizes donor chart according to established documentation standards.

3. Maintains preservation of organs during and after the organ recovery process in collaboration with surgeons, organ recovery coordinators, hospital staff and preservation staff to maximize organ viability.

  • Prepares preservation equipment/supplies for preservation and/or storage of solid organs during the organ recovery process
  • Prepares donor hospital operating room and provides education of the organ recovery and preservation process to nursing staff
  • Assures aseptic technique is used during the set-up, recovery, and packaging processes
  • Communicates and interacts with transplant surgeons to provide information pertinent to the perfusion and preservation of organs
  • Maintains solid organ preservation, either with cold storage or mechanical perfusion, after recovery until the time of transplantation and/or export occurs
  • Prepares organs for export for transplant and/or research following UNOS guidelines in collaboration with Organ Recovery Coordinator/surgical recovery specialists staff
  • Insures proper materials are present and appropriately packaged for export
  • Prepares and monitors kidney(s) on mechanical preservation equipment until the time of transplant
  • Travels via ground/air (fly-outs) with recovery staff (surgeons, physician assistants, medical students) to donor hospitals to recover and provide preservation of imported organs

4. Prepares and maintains donor documentation to assure compliance with all federal and/or state governing agencies and industry guidelines.

  • Documents pertinent donor information for the donation process.
  • Documents proper identification of donors with recovery staff
  • Maintains and documents pertinent organ preservation information
  • Performs documentation of information before, during, and after organ recovery case

5. Performs QA process on chart and other materials needed for completion of donor chart to assure compliance with all federal and/or state governing agencies and industry guidelines.

  • Ensures accurate documentation of charts during the QA process
  • Collects accurate documentation needed for chart completion in a timely manner
  • Assures all documentation standards are met and any deviation or departures are reported

6. Performs technical skills related to intraoperative donor care.

7. Assigned to perform the scrub role for the organ recovery procedures

8. Performs other duties as required or assigned.


Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Certification in healthcare field and/or applicable degree strongly preferred
  • Certified Surgical/Scrub Tech preferred
  • CTP certification (must obtain within 2 years; will receive reimbursement & completion bonus)
  • Operating room experience highly preferred or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge
