Surgical Veterinary Assistant Position Overview 

The Surgical Veterinary Assistant plays a vital role in providing high-quality medical care to the animals under our care. This position involves working closely with the staff veterinarian to deliver comprehensive veterinary services including (but not limited to) surgical assistance, sterilizing surgical instruments, pre and post-operative care and patient management. The ideal candidate is skilled in veterinary care, possesses excellent communication abilities and is passionate about animal welfare. Daily Tasks/Job Description

• Administer pre and post op medications


• Perform surgical prep for a variety of surgical procedures


• Monitor patients under anesthesia


• Recover patients after procedures


• Fill medications


• Sterilize surgical instruments


• Wrap surgical packs


• Follow proper cleaning and sterilizing guidelines


• Assist veterinary team with miscellaneous tasks

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Work Experience

• Animal handling experience required


• Veterinary medical knowledge required


• Surgical prep/monitoring experience preferred

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Must have high comfort level with animal handling and restraint


• Have/can be rabies vaccinated


• Basic comfort level with administering medications (oral, topical and injectable)


• Basic knowledge of canine and feline anatomy


• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and quick decision making


• Attention to detail


• Critical thinking skills

Shifts and scheduling:

• Typically Monday-Thursday, some weekends may be required

Physical Capabilities Required

• Regularly exerting 50 pounds of force to lift or move animals/objects


• Moderate/High amounts of walking, standing, lifting, crouching, balancing, reaching and other repetitive motions required

COMPENSATION: Starting at $16/Hour DOE
