Job Description - Survey Technician

Description

GENERAL PURPOSE FOR THE POSITION

Performs a variety of independent technical duties in the field of Land Surveying and design technology. Using current technology, performs a variety of field and office technical tasks associated with land surveys utilized in the location, design, and/or construction of roads, structures, geotechnical, flood control projects, storm water facilities, recreational facilities, land development, subdivisions, or other engineering projects, transportation planning, traffic control of highways, energy exploration, energy development, and/or other designs. Independently performs a variety of complex duties involving the download processing and conversion of field survey data from a variety of collection methods for applications in software packages. Assures quality control prior to forwarding jobs to the Survey CAD technician by closing and adjusting traverses, catching and correcting field blunders, verifying coverage, and checking stakeout work. This position may also be asked to fulfill the duties of survey crew chiefs or instrument operators.

  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities. The Company reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities to meet business and organizational needs as necessary.

1. Receives, processes and converts field survey data from GPS and/or Total Stations for use by CAD or other technicians and software applications, such as Trimble Business Center and MS Excel in the production of surface and topological maps, as-built data bases and related items to accurately reflect existing and as-built conditions for assigned projects.

2. Utilizes processed field data to produce digital mapping which accurately reflects conditions in the field for assigned projects.

3. Performs title research online, or in actual county courthouse, to identify property owners of record, related encumbrance information and/or chain of title information. 

4. Calculates stakeout points, shape files, and/or cut sheet documentation for use by field staff in construction stakeout of site features. 

5. Generates various project deliverables, conventional survey/engineering plans, and/or digital CAD files, based on individual client needs as specified by the assigned project manager. 

6. Downloads and processes data collected in the field through hand written notes/details or other methods and equipment. 

7. Utilizes processed field data to produce digital mapping which accurately reflects conditions in the field for assigned projects.

8. Inputs and adjusts field traverse information as required.

9. Aids in preparation of field packets for field crews to use on upcoming jobs.

10. Creates field views to verify data plots and ensure land features are as depicted on project survey maps.

11. Provides support to survey technicians or CAD technicians in other Dawood Engineering offices, as required; may require long distance travel and overnight stays.

12. Reports recurring field errors in coding, line work, or incorrect field note format to supervisors. 

13. Works as a part of a field crew, or as a single person field crew, on an as-needed basis. 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Equivalent to four years in high school, plus specialized training equal to two years of college

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

1-3 years related experience and/or training

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

Ability to obtain Surveyor-in-Training License issued by Pennsylvania Registration Board

Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification

Current vehicle driver’s license in the employee’s state of residence
