Job Description - Surveying Aide / Field Crew

Position Summary:
The Surveying Aide will serve as the second member of a two-person field crew supporting USDA Forest Service boundary maintenance, corner work, GPS/GNSS collection, and field documentation throughout western North Carolina.



Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with locating and traversing Forest Service boundary lines.
- Assist with painting, posting, signage placement, and boundary maintenance.
- Assist with locating, maintaining, and establishing boundary corners.
- Support monument searches and identification of bearing trees and other boundary evidence.
- Assist with GPS/GNSS setup and field observations.
- Record field notes, corner/tract identifiers, photographs, and measurements.
- Carry survey equipment, paint, signs, and field supplies.
- Assist with vegetation clearing and access necessary for field operations.
- Maintain field equipment and supplies.
- Report damaged monuments, potential encroachments, lost corners, and other unusual conditions to the Field Lead.
- Perform sustained outdoor work in wooded, steep, and uneven terrain.



Qualifications:
- Prior surveying, forestry, construction, outdoor field, GIS field collection, or similar experience preferred.
- Ability to learn survey/GPS equipment and boundary-marking procedures.
- Ability to read maps and follow field instructions.
- Ability to hike and carry field equipment over rugged terrain.
- Ability to work outdoors for full field days in variable weather.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
