Switchman - Decatur, Alabama

We are expanding our outreach and searching for railcar repair & switching and track personnel to fill open positions in Decatur, AL.  Starting pay at up to $23/hour, based on experience and certifications.

What You'll Do:

• Read and follow switching instructions/list indicating track assignments and cars to be switched
• Operating Locomotive/Trackmobile operators to start or stop trains when coupling or uncoupling cars, using hand signals, lanterns, or two-way radio communication
• Observe signals from other crewmembers so that work activities can be coordinated
• Inspect couplings, air hoses, and bandbrakes to ensure that they are securely fastened and functioning properly
• Inspect tracks, cars, engines for defects, report service needs and make sure they are corrected before operation
• Inspect, repair and replace defective or worn components on railcar equipment in safe working order, such as truck assembly, safety appliances, brake systems, wheels, draft systems, heavy coupling, broken knuckles, and air brake hoses using handing tools
• Diagnose and identify malfunctions
• Inspect bearings, seals, gaskets, wheels, and coupler assemblies to determine if repairs are needed
• Test and operate engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
• Clean units and components
• Ensure proper operation

• 1-3 years working with railcars repair, switching, or similar field
• A good work ethic
• Experience with hand tools
• Previous mechanic experience desired
• Familiarity with welding a plus
• Updated background check and drug test
