Location: Research Engineering Campus, Idaho National Laboratory 

 

Schedule: 9-80s with every other Friday off  

Program Duration: 12 months, with a potential 1-year extension.

 

Position Overview


Idaho National Laboratory requires Electrical Engineers to shape the future of energy innovation by advancing critical nuclear and grid technologies that secure America's energy infrastructure and scientific leadership. You'll perform detailed analyses on power transmission and distribution systems to inform development and design decisions, pursue solutions for secure, sustainable, and resilient electrical power systems, and apply engineering principles in the design and execution of power-related experiments. Your responsibilities include collaborating with customers to develop system alternatives and analyze risks, providing technical reviews of design outputs and ensuring compliance with requirements, establishing configuration management of assigned systems, developing functional requirements and test procedures, and coordinating testing activities with other engineers. You'll evaluate system performance to improve efficiency and reliability, create and execute design of experiments, mentor junior engineers, and oversee design and maintenance of high-risk electrical systems operations.
 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform detailed analyses on current power transmission and distribution systems to inform development and
    design decisions associated with research and development opportunities.
  • Apply electrical engineering theories and principles to pursue solutions resulting in secure, sustainable, resilient, robust, reliable electrical power systems, including all aspects of energy generation, storage, transmission, distribution, management, and use.
  • Apply sound engineering principles in the design, development, and execution of electrical power-related experiments.
  • Collaborate with customers in developing system alternatives and analyze alternatives to ensure program requirements are met, including evaluating risks, costs, and other performance measures. Provide technical reviews of design output (design change packages, installation procedures, and testing procedures, etc.) and obtain appropriate approvals for design output. Ensure design modifications meet technical baseline requirements.
  • Establish and maintain configuration management of assigned system(s) while maintaining existing drawings and databases. Develop functional and operation requirements, system design descriptions, and test procedures for equipment.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineers, planners, operations personnel, and other stakeholders to ensure the proper execution of testing activities. Provide first order data analysis and report test status to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provide input on the functionality of test equipment and support procurement activities in acquiring equipment, spare parts, or other systems for plant modifications and/or research systems.
  • Evaluate and assess system/equipment performance and history to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Create design of experiments including data acquisition, data collection in laboratory, and appropriate data reduction as dictated by project needs.
  • Analyze, interpret, and evaluate experimental results.
  • Mentor junior engineers and other technical personnel in appropriate test procedures, maintenance, and laboratory activities.
  • May be responsible for all electrical engineering aspects of project work, including identifying the equipment, services, space, personnel, work controls, etc., required to execute given projects.
  • May oversee the design and maintenance of assigned high-risk electrical systems operations.
  • May direct others or work directly with equipment vendors to diagnose and repair malfunctions and/or design and specify new equipment to meet customer requirements.
  • May direct and execute the application design, set-up, and basic operation of complex high power and high voltage equipment and systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required:

  • Bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering or directly related engineering degree from a program accredited by ABET.
  • Experience commensurate with level.
  • Depending on assigned directorate, may be required to be a US citizen and obtain and maintain a L or Q level security clearance

 

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or directly related field from a program accredited by ABET.
  • Experience in R&D, systems engineering, and electrical power systems.
  • Experience using design and analysis programs such as ORCAD, CAD, MatLab, Labview, PowerWorld, and/or RTDS.
  • Experience designing, developing, and/or conducting experiments with electrical equipment.
  • Diagnostic experience with controller area networks.
  • Experience working with high-risk equipment, safety requirements, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering, instrumentation and control, and software systems applicable to experimental processes.
     

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the people is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Working Conditions:

 Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls and a laboratory setting subjected to variable weather and potentially radiological controlled areas. Incumbent may work outside in extreme temperatures (hot and cold). The noise level is generally moderate. Periodic travel required in the normal course of job performance. Position may include exposure to mechanical, electrical, pressure, temperature, and other potential hazards. Working at heights and confined spaces may be required. Necessary safety equipment may be required including personal protective equipment (PPE) when required. Periodic safety training is necessary. Position may be required to work irregular and/or overtime hours of more than 8 hours/day and working alone. May be required to obtain job specific industry and INL related testing qualifications

Job Information:

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Electrical Engineer to work on our Instrumentation and Controls team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research and Engineering Office Building with every other Friday off. 

The pay range for this position is $83,964 – $90,948. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
