Job Description - Tax Director - Head of Tax Department
We are a dynamic and growing CPA firm located in Maple Shade, NJ, providing tax, accounting, and advisory services to a diverse client base of small to mid-sized businesses and individuals. With a strong focus on client service and professional excellence, we are seeking a seasoned Tax Director to lead our expanding tax department. This position is HYBRID (not fully remote).
Position Overview The Tax Director will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management of our 15-person tax department. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing the preparation and review of business and individual tax returns, ensuring high-quality standards, developing team talent, and collaborating with firm leadership to drive client satisfaction and operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate is a licensed CPA with at least 10 years of progressive tax and managerial experience within a public accounting firm.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and direction to the tax department, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and accountability.
Lead hiring, training, and development efforts along with performance reviews to build and retain a high-performing team of tax professionals.
Oversee tax department processes in partnership with the Project Manager to manage workflow, resource allocation, and team utilization.
Collaborate with firm leadership on business development, departmental strategy and overall firm growth, including the identification of new service opportunities.
Evaluate and implement technology driven process improvements, including AI and automation to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Manage tax engagements to ensure timely, accurate, and budget-conscious delivery.
Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns for businesses (partnerships, S-corps, C-corps) and high-net-worth individuals (1040s).
Provide technical tax expertise and guidance on advanced tax matters and planning strategies.
Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, building strong, long-term relationships and offering proactive solutions to meet their goals.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax laws and regulatory changes to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for clients.
Uphold firm policies and maintain high standards of ethics and integrity.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college Active CPA license is required. Minimum of 10 years of tax experience in a public accounting firm, including at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role. In depth knowledge of corporate, partnership, and individual taxation. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and develop a team. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client relationship skills. Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Proficiency with tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess) and Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with EOS® (Entrepreneurial Operating System) a plus.
