Job Description - Tax - Senior Associate

Description

KT is seeking a motivated accountant to join our Tax team.

Ketel Thorstenson, LLP, is a full-service accounting firm rich in history, serving clients in the Black Hills region since 1936. Currently, we have 22 partners and over 50 CPAs, with offices in Rapid City and Spearfish, SD, and Gillette, WY. Essential Functions

  • Using discretion and judgement to prepare individual, partnership, corporate and other various tax returns, including any related research as may be needed. Plan and coordinate the flow of information with clients. Assist in the billing process as needed.
  • Using an elevated level of discretion, judgement, and advanced knowledge, begin reviewing tax returns as needed.
  • Using advanced knowledge of accounting to analyze, interpret, and make decisions from varying fact or circumstances to assist clients with tax and accounting inquiries. 
  • Begin working towards development of a niche area.
  • Continue to develop working relationships with co-workers.
  • Develop a strong relationship with clients through regular contact, personal attention, and good money saving advice; serve as a trusted client advisor.
  • Possess advanced technical knowledge and stay up to date on all changes to laws and regulations through in-office training and independent research. 
  • Research and present internal technical seminars on variety of topics.
  • Assist with the initial and ongoing training of staff. Participate in the firm’s coaching, mentoring, and buddy programs.
  • Assist with recruitment and engagement activities.
  • Actively participate in and promote to others firm sponsored team building activities. Be willing to assist in brainstorming ideas for change/improvement for the firm as well as implementing and facilitating these changes.
  • Attend professional development and training sessions on a regular basis, including personal development and leadership training. Adhere to any professional licensing continuing education requirements.
  • Participate in outside organizations to expand opportunities (i.e., be present in your community through community services, sports, clubs, etc.)
  • Adhere to the highest degree of professional standards and strict client confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned by Partner-in-Charge or another member of the Partner group.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field such as Finance or Business.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or EA (Enrolled Agent) certification or in process.
  • Tax consulting and compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of corporate and public accounting experience required. Experience in individual tax return preparation. 
  • Demonstrate professionalism through strong ethical conduct.
  • Willingness to put forth effort necessary to meet client’s deadlines and accommodate client needs.
  • Exceptional client service and communications skills, including written and verbal communications.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. Strong dedication to teamwork.
  • Be a problem solver with focus and drive; ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Possess efficient organization and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate a high-level of commitment to KTLLP; possess a positive attitude; and ability to have fun.
  • Participate as a team player to meet the goals of the department and firm.
  • Excellent computer skills and willingness/ability to learn new systems.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines.
  • This position will sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk and work on a computer. The position may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
  • The employee may be required to travel for business purposes. Travel may be in town, out of town, and/or overnight. 

Work Schedule & Location:

  • This is a full-time position working M-F 40 hours per week (during non-peak season). 
  • Required hours during peak season may increase to 60+ hours per week.
