Job Description - Teacher


To carry out faithfully all the responsibilities of a Christian teacher as described in the Mission Statement of Spanish River Christian School. All teachers are directly responsible to their principal for the performance of their duties. This includes strict adherence to all rules and regulations of the school. Teachers are expected to attend all meetings and conferences called by the Headmaster or Principal. They are also expected to assist in co-curricular activities. All teachers are to submit two goals for the classroom. Teaching staff is also required to submit long- range plans at the beginning of the school year. A background screening is required of all candidates offered employment.

REPORTS TO: 
Headmaster and Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Current certification in this state in the subject area or grade level for which the teacher is hired is preferred.
  3. Active member of Spanish River Presbyterian Church or other church approved by the administration.
  4. Must be personally committed to the Christian faith.
  5. Demonstrated ability to teach children well.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  1. Demonstrate love for God:
    1. Express specific knowledge of the Bible and its application to subject area(s).
    2. Practice daily devotions of prayer, reading of God’s Word, and meditation.
    3. Give Christian service to others both within and outside the school.
    4. Model an exemplary Christian walk in speech and acts.
    5. Submit to authority out of obedience to Christ.
 
  1. Demonstrate love for students:
    1. Treat each child as uniquely gifted by God for the purpose of serving others (I Peter 4:10).
    2. Show through actions that each child is made to reflect God himself.
    3. Discipline all students fairly and firmly out of love for them.
    4. Encourage all students persistently (catch each of them “doing good”).
    5. Guide all students in helping other students learn.
    6. Evaluate students’ progress in learning with announced criteria fairly applied.
 
  1. Demonstrate Christian professional competence and vision:
    1. Show a strong knowledge of learning theory, curriculum design, and subject area(s).
    2. Construct and/or use courses, units, and lessons that integrate knowledge.
    3. Select materials and lesson designs that specifically carry out the goals derived from the school’s mission statement.
    4. Use evaluation instruments that match the school’s goals and specific objectives that allow each child to show well what he/she has learned, and that help students meet high expectations from learning.
    5. Fit students with the “glasses of Scripture” for viewing all of life rightly.
    6. Pursue further learning of subject area(s) while seeking the best pedagogy for the school’s goals.

  1. Communicate effectively according to biblical standards:
    1. Speak clearly, honestly, and with great concern for the audience.
    2. Use fresh analogies to connect new concepts to students’ experience.
    3. Relate stories of God’s faithfulness, personal and communal, with clarity and enthusiasm.
    4. Vary the means (visual, audible, tactile) and language (abstract, concrete, metaphorical, etc.) depending on the subject and the needs of all children.
    5. Encourage each child’s expression, and help students to adopt biblical principles for making choices.
    6. Model awe for the destructive power of sin and God’s restoration of creation and human beings
 
  1. Build Christian community within and outside the school:
    1. Give help to fellow teachers and support staff.
    2. Assist student beyond the classroom: playground, hallways, extracurricular sponsorship, personal guidance, etc.
    3. Meet with staff members to listen, learn, worship, and exchange advice for helping students meet the goals of the school.
    4. Contact parents for help in educating their child.
    5. Provide a classroom atmosphere (displays, warmth, arrangement of furniture, etc.) that fosters Christian community.
 
  1.  Keep confidences at all times. Confidential information is to be kept within the proper channels.
