Position Overview:
The Teacher’s Aide - Vista Haven is responsible for assisting in the planning, implementation, and administration of a curriculum that is developed and facilitated for Unaccompanied Children in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. The teacher aide demonstrates knowledge of trauma informed care and infuses trauma-informed framework, Attachment, Regulation, and Competency (ARC) in their daily interactions with staff and Unaccompanied Children. Assists in tracking student progress and informs parents/sponsors and staff of such. Teacher aides are in an assigned classroom 5 days per week, year round. Will provide a multi-subject curriculum for age groups 13-17. Monitors student residents’ participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to everyone.
Essential Job Duties (other duties may be assigned):
- Adhering to the following standards of professionalism:
- Work effectively with the teacher and other school staff by maintaining effective communication regarding student residents and other work-related matters and consistent behavior management programs and matters related to the academic curriculum.
- Demonstrating an understanding of the Unaccompanied Children population and continuing to develop skills and knowledge in working with Unaccompanied Students.
- Attending the required meeting, in-services, and training for continued professional growth.
- Create, foster, and maintain a physical environment that is conducive to learning and optimal growth and development; promote social interaction with all students.
- Establishing and maintaining clear and appropriate physical and verbal boundaries with the resident students.
- Maintaining the confidentiality of every student.
- Coordinate the organization of student educational assessments, support classroom organization, upload weekly attendance on the student portal, and assist with document photocopying tasks.
- Being timely, accurate, and inclusive in the following areas of documentation:
- Demonstrates professional and effective communication abilities, including the completion of written reports, letters, and plans, initiating verbal communications with Unaccompanied Children and inter and intra-agency personnel, and exhibiting an ongoing ability to engage formal and informal support on behalf of students.
- Submission of Incident Reports when needed.
- Collection of data for Treatment Plan Reviews, Progress Reports, and other data (i.e., Class Attendance Records, student files/documents, and other classroom files regarding students).
- Ordering and maintaining inventory of classroom supplies and forms/documents needed.
- Demonstrating competency in the following areas of instruction, interaction with UC students, and supervision:
- Assist in the implementation of classroom activities based on the individual needs of the student and the goals set forth.
- Assisting teacher in the development, writing, and administering of lesson plans and quizzes/tests when necessary, grading student assignments, and having materials, supplies, and equipment ready for class each day.
- Engaging in and being knowledgeable of the teacher’s class lessons and conferring with the teacher about appropriate assignments, to effectively aid students.
- During class, support teacher and circulate among students to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the concepts being taught.
- Having knowledge of and implementing students’ goals, objectives, and accommodations and familiarity with and follow-through on Treatment plans.
- Providing 1:1 assistance to students and working with students in small groups.
- Assisting in maintaining an organized, clean/neat, and inviting classroom environment.
- Interacting and intervening with students effectively, by developing a positive and appropriate rapport with students, treating students with respect, and actively engaging and intervening with students
- Effectively motivate students by assisting them with academic work and behavior needs, also provide positive feedback and encouragement, provide an atmosphere of confidence and rapport, and guide students to appropriate problem-solving while fostering students’ independence. Consistently use proactive intervention with students’ behaviors and conflicts to prevent potential negative and dangerous confrontations in the classroom, the cafeteria, and the schoolyard.
- Using crisis intervention in a timely manner and following CPI procedures and policies when necessary.
- Maintaining constant supervision of students in the classroom, before/after school, during snack, and during lunch.
- Ensuring orderly transition before/after school and between class periods.
- May be required to provide daily transportation when needed.
- Other duties as assigned by lead Teacher, Vice Principal or Program Director.
What you bring to VDM?
- Experience with students with a history of trauma preferred.
- Some classrooms or recreational experience preferred.
- Ability to hear and verbally communicate with others.
- Ability to interrupt physical altercations among UC students and administer CPR/First Aid.
- May be required to obtain a Class B driver’s license.
- Must fulfill all requirements of employment, including clearance of all required background records (e.g., Department of Justice, Child Abuse, California Community Care Licensing, County
Sanction List, etc.), professional reference checks, physical examination with TB test, and drug screening.
Pay Range: $22.83 - $22.83 / hour
