Job Summary

Nuclear Medicine Technologist 1 (Non-Registered/Non-Certified) assists in performing nuclear medicine procedures under the direct supervision of a Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist and/or a Physician. This role supports the imaging department in both inpatient and outpatient settings by preparing equipment, assisting with patient care, and safely handling radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with established protocols. Technologists in this role are expected to actively learn and develop competency in nuclear medicine imaging—including myocardial perfusion imaging and PET imaging—with the goal of obtaining professional certification within the required timeframe.

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program.

  • Enrollment in or completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology Program preferred but not required.

  • Previous clinical nuclear medicine experience preferred but not required.

Licensure / Certification

  • Current ARRT (R) certification required.

  • ARRT (CT) preferred but not required.

  • Must be actively pursuing CNMT and/or ARRT (N) registry.

  • Must obtain ARRT (N) registry or CNMT certification within 24 months of hire.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

  • Current Texas Medical Board (TMB) licensure required.

Work Expectations & Advancement

  • Must complete all required NMTCB/ARRT (N) competencies under the supervision of a Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

  • Expected to obtain ARRT (N) or CNMT (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board) certification within 24 months of hire date.

  • Expect to learn and become competent in myocardial perfusion/cardiac stress imaging and PET/CT imaging (as available).

  • Demonstrates commitment to professional development and advancement into a Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist role.

  • Must maintain strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Demonstrates competency in EPIC, PACS, and Nuclear Medicine Information Systems.

  • May require evening, weekend, on-call, or holiday shifts.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, position, and transport patients and equipment as required.

  • Ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods, occasional sitting.

  • Adequate vision, hearing, eye-hand coordination, and fine motor skills for safe handling of radiopharmaceuticals and operation of imaging equipment.

  • Ability to concentrate on detailed tasks with intermittent interruptions.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Exposure to radiation, biohazards, communicable diseases, and bodily fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies patient identity using two approved identifiers (armband and MRN); reviews the physician's order for accuracy and completeness; makes necessary corrections or additions; explains all procedures thoroughly and obtains informed consent as required.

  • Coordinates inpatient procedures with scheduled outpatients to minimize patient wait times and properly prioritize urgent exams.

  • Positions patients appropriately to obtain optimal diagnostic images; adjusts imaging techniques and equipment settings based on patient condition, clinical indication, or specialty exam requirements.

  • Performs procedures under direct supervision in accordance with established protocols; annotates images; reviews for technical and diagnostic accuracy; and documents all examinations.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of ancillary equipment and maintains accurate departmental records.

  • Learns and performs myocardial perfusion and cardiac stress imaging under the direct supervision of a Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

  • Develops competency in PET/CT imaging (as available).

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of nuclear medicine procedures, radiopharmaceuticals, and radiation safety principles.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
