Position Summary:

The Facilities Technician III, is a senior-level technician responsible for the safety, reliability, and compliant operation of EMCORE's manufacturing and office facilities. This role partners closely with the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) team to manage chemical inventory, receive and transfer chemicals to designated storage locations, and execute the full range of preventive and corrective maintenance activities required to keep the facility running.

Key Responsibilities:

Chemical Handling & EHS Support:

• Receive incoming chemical deliveries, verify shipments against purchase orders and SOS records, and inspect containers for damage or leaks prior to acceptance.


• Safely transfer chemicals from the receiving dock to approved storage locations (flammable cabinets, acid/base cabinets, gas bunkers, and cleanroom dispense areas) following SOS, DOT, and site segregation requirements.


• Maintain accurate chemical inventory records in the site inventory management system, including lot numbers, container counts, expiration dates, and storage locations; perform routine cycle counts and full physical inventories.


• Partner with EHS on hazardous waste accumulation, labeling, weekly inspections, satellite/90-day area management, and preparation of waste for licensed-hauler pick-up.


• Support EHS programs including SPCC, stormwater, air permits, Tier 11/EPCRA reporting, and Cal/EPA or state equivalent recordkeeping by providing accurate usage and inventory data.


• Respond to chemical spills and emergencies as a trained member of the site spill response team; restock spill kits, PPE stations, and emergency eyewash/shower supplies.


• Participate in EHS audits, safety walks, JHAs, and incident investigations; help drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.

General Facilities Operations:

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facility systems including HVAC, chillers, boilers, compressed air, vacuum, DI water, process cooling water, exhaust/scrubbers, and bulk/specialty gas systems.


• Troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical (up to applicable voltage), lighting, doors, and general building infrastructure.


• Monitor building automation systems (BAS) and utility meters; respond to alarms and out-of-spec conditions to minimize production impact.


• Execute work orders in the CMMS, document completed tasks, parts used, and time, and maintain organized maintenance records.


• Support facility projects, equipment moves, construction tie-ins, and contractor escorts; serve as a point of contact for facilities vendors when assigned.


• Maintain shop areas, tool cribs, and MRO inventory in a clean, organized, 5S-compliant condition.


• Mentor Tech I and Tech II personnel on procedures, safety practices, and troubleshooting techniques.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED; technical/trade school certificate or associate's degree in a facility, mechanical, electrical, or related discipline preferred.


• Minimum 5 years of facilities or industrial maintenance experience, preferably in semiconductor, photonics, pharmaceutical, or other regulated manufacturing environment.


• Demonstrated experience handling and storing industrial and/or hazardous chemicals in compliance with OSHA HazCom, DOT, RCRA, and local fire code requirements.


• Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and compressed gas systems; ability to read mechanical, electrical, and P&ID drawings.


• Proficiency with CMMS and inventory management software; comfortable with standard computer applications (Microsoft Office, email).


• HAZWOPER 24- or 40-hour certification, RCRA Hazardous Waste, and DOT/IATA training (current or willing to obtain within 90 days).


• Ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, work at heights, wear a respirator, and use full chemical-resistant PPE.


• Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and a safety-first mindset.


• This position has an early first shift schedule. Typically, 5:30 am - 6 am start time.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in a cleanroom or semiconductor lab environment.


• Familiarity with specialty gas cylinder changes, gas cabinet operation, and toxic gas monitoring systems.


• EPA Universal refrigerant certification, low-voltage electrical license, or boiler operator certification.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

This position works on-site in a manufacturing facility that includes offices, warehouse, and cleanroom areas. The technician will routinely be exposed to chemicals, compressed gases, moving mechanical equipment, elevated noise levels, and varying temperatures. Standing, walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting 50 lbs. are required regularly. Use of respirators, chemical splash protection, and other PPE is required when performing chemical-handling tasks.

Salary Range:

• Dependent on skill and experience levels.


• $35 - $36 per hour
