Job Description - Technical Theater Manager

TECHNICAL THEATER MANAGER


The Technical Theatre Manager is a role that blends production management, technical design, and technical oversight. This individual will oversee scenic and technical design, oversee crew participants for all performances that need support, manage all operations and audiovisual (AV) support needed in the Black Box Theatre, gymnasium, and other on-campus and external performance facilities (i.e. ESPAC if relevant), mentor students in technical theatre arts, and support the Stagecraft Seminar. The role requires expertise in theatre production, technical systems, and student engagement, along with the ability to coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, creative environment.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Production & Set Design Leadership



  • Serve as Technical Director for all school performing arts productions (i.e. musical theatre productions, choir concerts, studio orchestra performances, etc), overseeing all processes and procedures from load-in through strike.

  • Collaborate closely with directors, choreographers, and other creative staff to realize artistic visions within budget and timeline constraints.

  • Manage student and volunteer crews during load-in, tech rehearsals, performances, and strike.

  • Maintain production calendars, crew assignments, and build schedules.


Facility & Technical Operations Management



  • Oversee daily operations of the Black Box Theatre, ensuring readiness for classes, rehearsals, and events.

  • Provide AV and technical support for events and performances in the Black Box, gymnasium, and other school performance venues, including sound mixing, lighting operation, projection, and live-streaming setups.

  • Maintain lighting, sound, rigging, and AV equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Coordinate any necessary repairs.

  • Coordinate facility scheduling, load-ins/outs, and event technical needs in collaboration with school administration and event organizers.


Additional Duties



  • Manage production and facility budgets, including purchasing materials, equipment, and supplies with approval from the Performing Arts Coordinator.

  • Maintain organized scene shop, prop storage, and technical equipment inventory.

  • Enforce safety policies for performing arts operations, enforcing policies for tools, rigging, electrical systems, and the like.

  • Act as a liaison with external vendors, rental houses, and guest artists.

  • Support school-wide performances, assemblies, and special events with technical expertise.

  • Support the Stagecraft Seminar, providing instruction in set design, scenic painting, lighting, sound, props, stage management, and other backstage disciplines.

  • Develop and implement curriculum aligned with industry standards, fostering technical skills, safety awareness, and collaborative teamwork.

  • Assess and provide feedback on student work, integrating project-based learning and real-world production experiences.


QUALIFICATIONS



  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Theater Arts, or related field ( or equivalent professional experience). 

  • 3+ years of experience in technical theater production, stagecraft instruction, or related roles.

  • Proficiency with theatrical lighting, sound, projection, and rigging systems. 

  • Experience in set construction, scenic painting, and stage management.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during production periods.

  • Teaching credential or experience in a school, college, or conservatory setting preferred.

  • Certification or training in theatrical safety (OSHA, ETCP, or equivalent) preferred. 

  • Experience with QLab, Vectorworks, or other industry-standard software preferred.


COMPENSATION


Compensation will fall within a range of $55,838.47 - $68,684.40 and commensurate with experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits plan, including (but not limited to):
