Job Description - Technical Writer
The Technical Publications team is currently seeking a Technical Writer. In this role, you will write and edit documentation that helps the end-user take the right action.Candidates will be expected to show their contributions to previous publications, demonstrate a process/project mindset, an ability to learn quickly, and a conceptual understanding of documentation as code.
The Role
Gather information from product managers and subject matter experts (such as engineers, quality assurance, software developers) across many departments.
Extract information from engineering documentation and tools (such as schematics, system specifications, Confluence, and Figma)
Ensure technical accuracy of content using a validation/QA process (that may differ from project to project), peer review content, etc.
Strategize and implement process improvements, for both documentation and related processes (such as task handoff between departments, maintaining publication repositories, etc.)
Source and use graphics and help guide decisions about where graphics are most helpful. (For example, collaborate with technical illustrators, take photos, and edit to highlight areas of emphasis).
Plan, track, and report on work using collaboration tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Smartsheet.
Document workflows and processes using Lucidchart, PowerPoint, etc.
Ensure that documentation conforms to Lucid styles and guidelines and help contribute to these style guides.
Qualifications
3+ years' experience in technical writing with knowledge of relevant content development tools
Bachelor’s degree, certificate in Technical Writing, or equivalent professional experience.
Ability to adopt the mindset of the consumer and create documentation best suited to their needs.
An understanding of Agile values, and a willingness to engage end-users for feedback early in the publication creating process.
Attention to detail, strong personal organization, collaboration, and time management skills.
Ability to work both tight and frequently shifting deadlines
Must have a problem-solving mindset – the ability to work independently, interact with internal teams as well as customers to identify main points, then propose and iterate on solutions
Positive attitude toward change and inevitable mid-project course corrections.
Markup language experience (such as HTML, XML, DITA XML, XLS or SGML).
Expertise with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Structured authoring tool experience (such as oXygen, XMetaL, structured FrameMaker, or Arbortext Editor).
Content Management System (CMS) experience (such as SDL LiveContent Architect).
Style guideline experience (Simplified Technical English, S1000D, MIL-STD, MMSTP, or custom style guide creation or contributions).
Previous experience with ‘how-to’ product documentation
Experience with CAD-based, 3D modeling tools such as 3DS Enovia (Composer, Work Instructions)
Strong working knowledge of Atlassian Confluence and JIRA
Adobe Photoshop or equivalent image-capturing and editing software
A portfolio of hard copy or soft copywriting samples and projects.
